I know with dogs, have no idea with owls, is that they go through varioius stages of development. I took my two Yorkshire Terriors, age 9 weeks, to a public event. It was for a school and the kids loved the dogs and wanted to pet them. At the time, I had no idea, but for a small animal, being petted on the head, the commotion etc. was very traumatizing. If I could do it agian, I would not. I bet owls have the same in terms of the times in their lives where they can accept stimulation or not. Yes, you do want them acccommodated to the public, but you don't want their sociality shut down. I'd rather have a happy animal to one that is terrified of being in public events. When you think of it, this is obviously not natural for an owl.

Hi, all our other owls are fine with crowds and busy places. We have had flying shows with 4000+ people before and that hasn't bothered them. This owl is just an exception really

I don’t want to be mean, but owls are not pets, their wild animals, they’re meant to be in the wild. I’m not trying to be mean, I kind of feel bad for owls, they’re just wild animals. But you know.

Depends on context, some owls and raptors cannot be released due to injuries or deformities, so, they are kept as ambassadors. Falconry is also another example and the bond between raptor and human is amazing. Humans need to learn about raptors somehow, and shows and these types of programs are the best way to do that! While your attitude is not a bad one, please be careful with passing judgements. Think of Falco, the eagle owl, from the zoo in NY that was "released" because a person thought he should be "Free" and ended up dying of rodenticide poisoning and other complications by being in an area to which he was not native and several other things.

Thankyou for this. There is so much conflicting information on feeding out there...can you comment on mixing what is fed to chicks? I was taught only to ever feed chicks, yet rats and mice are apparently more nutritional in other sources. I have a 3 week old AEO and have stuck to chick insides with a bit of yolk once a week so far.

This is a great list! I would add carelessness - someone we know once left the mews unlocked. And our Harris got away when my husband was in the process of securing her to a perch inside, we were airing the house with the doors open (it’s a German thing), and when I set down a basket of laundry, she panicked and took off out the front door. Four screw-ups all at once became a very effective learning experience for us. In part because she is well-manned/-trained (your #6!), she only landed on our garage and we were able to get her back quickly with a chick. Thank heavens we hadn’t fed her that day yet. Since then we have a vice grip on her jesses and don’t air the house when she’s inside!

@owladventuresuk
@owladventuresuk Ай бұрын
Hi, there is no harm giving roughage from a young age. I get my owls (including barn owls) from about 2 weeks old and they can digest the fur of the mice or the feather from a small piece of quail easily, the evidence in their pellets.

@@owladventuresuk thanks so much for that, I have experience with keeping and flying both Redtails and Barn Owls but from over 30 years back, however I'm getting back into what I loved and have Barnie on the way next week and it's my first hand rearing experience your videos are invaluable as may out there give information that is incorrect because unfortunately they have them as a PET owner and not the knowledge of being falconers! Please give this mythical king of owl birds its proper mythical Germanic name: in German "Uhu", in Dutch 'Oehoe", in English that should be "Oohoo", of course from the impressive sound it makes. Here not far from Amsterdam we had a half-domesticated, half-wild one living in a residential erea and constantly harrassing people, he totally earned the nickname in the press of "The Terror-Oohoo".
