These videos showing repair processes are great. Saves people a lot of time from having to research it or just figure it out through trial an error. 👍👍

The OEM recommended thermostat is 195. Replacing only the thermostat from 195 to 180 will NOT improve a cooling systems performance or fix an overheating issue. The only job of the thermostat is to close off the cooling system (radiator) until the engine reaches operating temp (195 for the 4.0L). Once open, the efficiency of the cooling system ( radiator's ability to dissipate heat) determines the hold temperature. If your cooling system normally sits at 210, then it will sit at 210 whether the t-stat opens at 195 or 180 (opening at 180 will only delay the engine reaching operating temp). This is regardless of weather temperatures. If your cooling system has trouble holding temp in Summer heat (or overheats) then there is an issue with the radiator's ability to dissipate heat that a lower thermostat will not address. The stock XJ cooling system is more than adequate for the 4.0L when properly maintained. XJ's never had overheating issues when they were new. It is only common issue now due to lack of preventive maintenance and majority of XJ's close to or over 200K miles.

The video was good until you got to the thermostat, and like most, have no clue their function within the cooling system. 25:12 A 195 thermostat does not mean it takes the engine longer to heat up and open up. The whole purpose is the exact opposite, by closing off the cooling system until 195, this ensures the engine warms up as quickly as possible. While a 180 thermostat would do the exact opposite, as it will open the cooling system before the engine has reached operating temperature. Now the engine has to fight with the cooling system to finally reach operating temperature. What exactly does differential from the thermostat temp and "higher heat" on your controls mean? Are you under the impression that the thermostat somehow determines the set temperature that the cooling system sits at? Is the "differential" listed on the thermostat packaging? lol

Running a lower thermostat has no advantage (potentially negative effects) and does nothing to resolve an overheating issue. The 4.0 Engine (6cyl not a V8) engineered operating temperature is 195'F. The cooling systems efficiency (ability to displace heat) determines where the temperature sits, ~-210'F. Putting in a lower thermostat that opens sooner, only delays the engine reaching operating temperature (prolonging the most damaging wear period of an engine, warm up) and does nothing to affect the cooling systems efficiency once open. The ECU controls the AUX electric fan which only activates at 218'F and shuts off at 208'F., meaning the engine is meant to run ~ 213'F. The ECU also controls fuel to ensure the engine reaches operating temperature asap, delaying operating temperature will decrease MPG as the ECU continues to feed additional fuel (rich condition) to help reach operating temperature. Anyone that recommends a lower thermostat has absolutely no clue how a cooling system works.

In flushing out my heater core and doing a coolant flush, the owners manual said to remove the plug on the lower left side of the engine. I tried, but no go, so I drained the radiator, flushed out the heater with water (after unhooking the heater valve) and started to fill the heater using the top heater hose. It seems that feeding water into the heater pushed out coolant out the nipple that the top heater hose was hooked to at the thermostat. What a surprise that flushed the block!! Can someone verify that this is possible?

Dude...I've had my X now for two years, did all kinds of work to it, watched all kinds of videos and this is the first time I have come across anyone talking about this. I just thought they didn't put as light in there. Not only that but I've had an under dash light kit for awhile and could never figure out an easy way to hook it up. This opens possibilities. Thanks.

I cannot advise running pure water in a cooling system. Water will corrode your entire system and it’s not a good day. It’s ok in a pinch, but do run some kind of coolant to properly protect your system. Not to mention it provides lubricity to your water pump

Thanks so much for the detailed video, very helpful. I wanted to share one small help I learned which seems to work: When burping the system, squeeze the upper radiator hose a few times because it's the highest point of the system and there will always be air there. Just 4 or 5 or so big squeezes should do it. Thanks again for sharing!

10:25 The fan clutch with the threaded end is actually not for the 4.0L ZJ. The "ZJ" fan clutch in your video appears to be for the WJ as the 4.0 on those have threaded shafts. The clutch body is identical, though the 4.0L ZJ fan clutch has the same shaft with the 4 mounting holes as the XJ clutch. I think you had the correct part number, just the wrong fan clutch in the box. As for lower radiator hoses, I just transfer the spring from the old one to the new one.

He seemed to know alot about that clutch but not enough to know that the belt doesn’t need to come off and taking the fan shroud off is the easiest way to get the fan out, otherwise you risk dinging the radiator trying to wiggle it out another way

You can add water to dexcool, but it has to be distilled. I’d recommend adding distilled regardless of type but its important with dexcool.

Got a 98 cherokee that i lut in a .motor but still can't get to run right. It will start and run but its really rough and tack jumps all over the place. Put in top dead center wirh timing mark on zero. Took it to good mechanic and he couldn't get it so i brought it home and trying to figure it out. Anything you could come up with why it won't run.

We have very high temp during the 65% of the year, in Mexico border ,my XJ 2000 never receive a good maintenance during my last 5 years of use ,the cherokee the last year support during 3 hours running trap in high traffic without moving, 5:30pm at 38-39 C , this event and others histories make me see with proud this warrior, after that invest on it to take more care , i dont use A/C in my personal vehicles, but the truck have mounted the system, i decide remove the ac radiator , and runs very vey fine reduce easy the heat more than 1/8 of temp. An under the capo, and have a good fast capacity to cooling when running, the old radiator was dirty and reduce the capacity to refresh ,actually the activation of the electric fan was reduced,🫡💪🏻👍🏼😎 of course you need to be crazy ,to leave the A/C but is not imposible. God bless you .
