I said in the other channel: Today's vinyls are made of digital sources so basically they are just CD in vinyl format. So all those word saying vinyl has warmth sound just a BS. If you want to collect original analogue sound go collecting those original pressing (not always first pressing) but definitely not today's pressing of old albums. For younger collectors to know, during the heyday of vinyls, their prices was almost similar to CDs, i.e when CD was retailed for $18, vinyl was 19-23 of the same album. This is to say the highest cost was actually the copyright not the physical format. Pressing a vinyl of 500 copies was around $5sh (incl the cost of master stamper), adding with the cost of sleeve that would come to $10sh/copy. Then plus with copyrights, distribution cost, margin, and other overhead costs, the price of an album should be $23- $29 as this video has suggested, not $40!

The people buying those are records are Johnny come latelies and thus is a passing fad for them. These kids aren’t investing in good systems for playback and will lose interest in the crossley audiophile sound real darn quick. The massive pressings of these flavor of the month records is clogging up plants and causing small artists to have their orders backed up for months. This increase in interest in vinyl has led to serious gouging and absolutely outrageous pricing. It’s gotten so bad that I’ve list interest, and know I’m buying cassettes and cd/SACD’s for physical media.

Thank you for sharing this interesting perspective, Billy. I wasn’t really aware of what the vinyl market was looking like these days. I’ve collected records since I was a kid in the late 80s, but pretty much stopped around 2020, and even pared my collection down quite a bit. I have been wondering what would become of what I could see as a bubble, with new single LPs going for $40+ in stores. Reminds me of the height of CD sales, when there were all sorts of ridiculous packaging gimmicks that would cost a fortune. And we bought them. Maybe the vinyl format isn’t really well suited to the type of listening that current pop music is designed for/targeted towards and that would partially explain the turnaround. And/or a lot of beginners will buy the $100 crosley that’s right next to the Harry Styles record and be underwhelmed by the sound quality! It’s a bit like the way printers and ink cartridges are today. You buy a $30 printer but end up spending $100 on ink. 😂 And also the sports card thing…I was the perfect age to get swept up in baseball card fever in the late 80s-early 90s. I still have all my cards, for whatever they’re worth lol! I was too young to really understand what was happening with that market…I just knew that it seemed like they were worth nothing all of a sudden. I had lost interest by then anyway, haha!

Many new buyers don't buy records to listen to. They do like some artists, as youth always does, and like to own their vinyl, it's cool, but they stream the music. The records are more like ornaments or a way to connect more with their favorable artist. But most if not all the listening is online. So the excitement over new record is not because of the chance of hearing the music or even wanting to hear it from vinyl, so they do not connect so deeply to the vinyl, it's mora like a fashion to them. And so within not so long time they loose interest. They still listen to music but vinyl is not essential to that, just an expensive collecting hobby and something else comes up that they want rather to spend their money on, and they get rid of their vinyl making place for something new. Of course this goes not for every youth and many older persons also don't buy vinyl to listen to. Unbelievable percentage of new vinyl is never taken out of the plastic, for different reasons, much higher percentage than was ever before. I think there will be place for vinyl forward but not as large market especially for new vinyl.

I live in London. I buy only vinyl and I do not have the perspective that old is gold. However the means of recording is gone - digital does not work. It took me a long time to realise that all vinyl these days is digitally processed which is why the sound is flat. Humans were conned into believing that digital is better than reality (analogue). Poetry is a subtle phenomenon which is analogue in nature. I only buy 1960s original vinyl now. It's cheaper and you are guaranteed 100% analogue. The sound is crisp and satisfying. There is also a never ending supply of great bands. The mind might be conned by digital but the nervous system isn't.

I switched from tapes to vinyl when everyone was dumping their records for CDs, now I've been buying more CDs since they are the affordable option. its cool that vinyl has come back but paying crazy high $40 prices for a brand new record or reissue does not make sense to me and makes me want the trend to end so prices will go back to normal
@BillyHurst4 күн бұрын
@@ADMx2545 we all hope prices will come back down to earth sooner rather than later. My biggest concern is the record labels might not see it that way. Just like certain other goods. Once the price went up and people became accustomed to paying it, they never come back down.

Where does a 60 year old start his rant. Been collecting vinyl and CD's since the early 80's. As for vinyl, I was turned off of new generic pressings (poor sound quality) when vinyl was making a come back around 2005 so I more or less have not purchased since, except for a handful of Analog Productions and other high end pressings. As a Canadian, when I heard that The Tragically Hip were going to reissue their catalog, I immediately listed my original MCA pressings on eBay as I new the flood of inferior pressings would diminish the value of my original Hip records. I did keep my sealed copy of Day For Night, MCA11140. Same for the Pumpkins HUTTLP-30, I had two copies and sold one when I heard they were reissuing it. True music collectors do this for the love of listening to well recorded music, whether vinyl or CD. I mean seriously, anyone that is paying $40 dollars plus for a record and dropping it on a Crosley record player, get your head examined. Last comment; most new music is recorded digitally, then pressed of vinyl (analog) only to be converted back to digital when played back at home. Something wrong there.

One of the main advantages with vinyl records is having the cover art nice and big, so it can be appreciated more. However. . . that's only a factor in metal, prog rock, 70s soul / funk, and other niche genres that value elaborate cover art. Most popular music has dreadfully boring covers- usually just a pic of the artist. So for me personally, if the cover is lame, I don't feel as incentivized to drop big $$$ on the vinyl.
