@@thesenstennial I dunno, I think they're both fine for third pairing RD. More worried about Kleven and if he he's not ready. Who are they gonna bring up for LD? First time in a long time I'm not worried about the right side.

They're "fine," but I wouldn't be comfortable rolling into the playoffs with one of them on the bottom pairing. Maybe one or both of them will prove me wrong, though! Left side does look more worrisome. Surprised they didn't pick someone up on waivers yesterday to provide more depth there.

I get really good vibes on Ullmark and the one thing that he has said throughout all of his interviews is how similar Ottawa is to Sweden. He is already house hunting and has made all the noises about committing long-term. I think we will see that before the year is out. He inks a 4 - 5 year deal with the Sens and solves the black hole issue that has been goaltending. Also, let's be honest here: if hes lights out and is a game-changer for the Sens, they are not going to let him walk; he will get paid in a massive contract agreement with us as we have been looking for a goaltender for so long. We also need this piece to prove to Brady, Timmy, and Sandy that the ownership is committing to building a winning team. That doesn't happen if Ullmark walks after 1 year, and I fear that Brady and Co would consider their options next summer if this doesn't get sorted.

Matt (on the left as I watch), that's a great summary of Josh Norris. I'm of your thinking here, as this season we will see a better Norris. Also, with Pinto back in the line-up from camp this is going to allow Josh to settle in the line up more and not be called upon more than is needed. Great stuff as always guys 🙂

Solid pod. I tuned in to hear my smart young friend Alex. I'd previously subscribed but for whatever reason pulled away. Ended up listening to your last pod as well, assessing all the off-season moves. And was thinking how smart you young fellas sounded with your takes, especially on the Chychrun trade. However, I have to respectfully disagree on your Joseph take. You make it sound like Staios decided one day he was going to move the guy and attach a third-round pick to make it happen. You also implied that we could comfortably handle the 2.95X2 hit. Neither are true imho. SS had made it clear to the entire league for months he wanted to move Joseph. Every team scouts the Sens. Clearly, all 31 teams could have had MJ for future considerations with no sweetener. Obviously, it took the sweetener to move him. Ergo, it pretty well illustrates that Joseph was overpaid in today's market. Second, there is very little cap space left and there's just NO WAY Sens won't add at least one D if not two. We're two months away from the start of the season -- obviously they need some flexibility to find a player or two to fill those needs, to say nothing of a possible forward addition. Other than not buying out Hamonic, I think Staios deserves at minimum a B-plus for his entire body of work, and that effort had to include moving Joseph out.
@thesenstennial

Hey Peter. Thanks for your thoughtful comment! Not going to lie, I think I was just attached to Joseph as a player on this team. Good defensive guy who was a threat on the PK and could chip in offensively at times, too. That said, I do like how the roster is shaping up and having some extra cap space for a depth player or two is definitely ideal. Thanks for re-subscribing. Hope you continue to enjoy our videos. Cheers!

Brannstrom needed a qualifying offer, hence he wasn't worth his price. Jensen trade is good, the market for Walker or Roy wasn't there, always easy to sign guys in theory when they actually don't want to come to Ottawa.
@thesenstennial
@thesenstennial 3 ай бұрын
Brännström could've been signed for less than his QO if the Sens had wanted to go that route, but I'd heard that Sean Tierney was one of the only guys in the front office who wanted to keep Branny. As for Walker/Roy, it's possible that they didn't want to come to Ottawa, but we truly don't know either way. I don't think that that makes the Chychrun trade "good," but here's hoping Jensen has a bounce back year and can bring some stability to Ottawa's blue line!

The past few videos, yall have been complaining about the new FO’s. Nothing about this roster is safe after last year. We are a small market team why would we get any RD FAs to come here? Staois knew the only way was through a trade. Mathieu Joseph’s production fell off a cliff half way through the season. You guys are missing the trees for the forest, Staois wants 200ft CONSISTENT PLAYERS. He will trade the whole roster if they don’t produce. He doesn’t give a f* who he’s best friends with. There’s a reason he got sat last year. Also another reason would be is he are nearly a cap team, why would anybody trade for Joseph after the horrendous year this team had. You guys are overvaluing players, players like Joseph in the market can be found for $2mill. That cap space has better use for a 3rd pair RD.
@isyArlo
@isyArlo 3 ай бұрын
I only recently got back into the sens after a long hiatus but agree with a lot of what you’re saying. SS had to have known before July 1st that none of the top quality RDs on the market were coming. Another way of looking at it is, some serious over spending and a lot of contracts that are going to be brutal in the future. I thought it was the NBA for a second. Ya the cap went up but Ottawa can’t get involved in that sort of spending. He’s done ok in cleaning up Pierre’s D mistakes and giving the roster a new look for next year.
@thesenstennial
@thesenstennial 3 ай бұрын
I get what you're saying. I think we've all come around on the signings (maybe Gregor aside... TBD) since we recorded these episodes about a week ago. He cooled off in the second half, but he was still a great defensive forward who logged good minutes on the PK. Worth $3mil? Maybe not. But trading a 3rd to get rid of him seems silly when he would still be an effective forward in the bottom 6. It's not like Staios has used that money towards any other bottom 6 free agency signings anyway. As for the whole RHD situation, you're likely right that they got the vibe that they wouldn't be able to sign any RHDs in free agency, but it still isn't the best asset management to trade your top trade piece (Chychrun) for a guy who's seven years older and just had a subpar season. Alas, we'll see what happens in October. Thanks for the comment!

@@thesenstennial I just think we are so emotionally attached as fans that we overvalue our own players. The hardest handicap right now is that more than HALF the league is capped out. Unfortunately Joseph is a luxury most teams cant afford. We still have an entire offseason, I don’t think Staois is done. His patience is the reason we got Ullmark and I think it’s short sighted to say he won’t wait until the market has cooled off and FAs are desperate for a contract. His patience has seem to payed off and I’m more than happy to be in a wait and see mode. I’m happier we didn’t “win the offseason”, please go ahead and underestimate this team, but I think this roster has a chance to compete and be more balanced down the road.

My conspiracy theory is that Staios is a Detroit fan. Got rid of both players responsible for Larkin’s injury, and signs Zub-puncher Perron for $4m. In all seriousness though I wonder if maybe there was some sort of problem off the ice that wasn’t reported? Joseph was benched for an unspecified reason early in the season and that was never mentioned again. Could be it made him a prime target for being shipped out if Staios was unimpressed with him.

3 of big problems with this team last year were: Goaltending: Big upgrade with Ullmark The team spiraling when they are down: added some veteran leadership to avoid the spiraling and improved defensively and in goal to avoid going down. Lack of grit other than Brady: added some sandpaper with Perron, Amadio, Grgor and Jensen, plus even more help coming with a draft full of big players. Moving on from Branny and giving Klevin those minutes should hopefully help there too

And like you say Sean walker is probably a better player than Jensen and younger. But whatever. He had a lot of work to do and he addressed pretty much everything. Jensen should be a good partner for chabot. But he’s 34 years old so won’t be around long. 2 years from now we’ll only have the third rnd pick to show from chychrun and all the assets we gave up to get him. One of those things we just have to forget and look forward. The lineup is improved overall.
