When they start down the aisle everyone just seems to be smiling to see a young woman so clearly and obviously happy to be there. Then as they get further down everyone seems to be looking at her in distaste.

Everyone stunning. Toni's Muriel can't contain her delight - her wish fulfillment realised at last. The bridesmaids led by Sophie Lee with their comic-awkward march up the aisle. The underrated subtle comedy of Daniel Lapaine's David and his dumbstruck reactions gets me every time. And as throughout the movie, all undercut by the tragic story of Muriel's mother. It's all genius.

Hubby and I walked out of the Registry office to that same song - I loved that scene and thought it was genius so promised myself I would do the same. Got a lot of laughs!!

Choosing a life of perfect falsehood to escape a life where the present ego is not recognized, her laughter is closer to tears because she knows better than anyone else that it is actually just a sandcastle. That's why this movie is such a great movie, and it allows me to see what is really important to my life.

The only person I felt any sympathy for in this movie was the poor mother. This movie was supposed to be a comedy, or maybe a "black" comedy but I thought it was terribly depressing and heartbreaking due to what happens to the poor mother.

Muriel wanted to get married so badly because it represented being rescued from her horrible life, and she was *obsessed* with the idea of a wedding because she’d finally feel seen. That’s why this is so heartbreaking, because she thinks she’s no longer invisible, but everyone is looking at her with judgment, and she doesn’t even realize she’s ignored her mother and best friend.
@Richard-vq7ud Жыл бұрын
And she also ignored the man who truly loved her. This wedding scene was briliiantly filmed. On the surface it was hysterical, but underneath was heart wrenching pain on so many levels.

Toni Colette is magnificent in this ! The accomplished, slightly manic, unnerving grin. The barely supressed giggles. The borderline psychotic squeaks of glee. I LOVE this movie. And ABBA, obviously.

it is a brilliant yet darkly funny tale about getting what you want. and it not turning they way you expect. all the actors in it play selfish people. it has a great cast. the late great actor BIll Hunter was outstanding as loathsome, repulsive Head of the Family as was the actress who played Muriels Mom. everytime you saw her your heartbroke for her, stuck in doors married to her Horrible poltician husband.
