Muriel wanted to get married so badly because it represented being rescued from her horrible life, and she was *obsessed* with the idea of a wedding because she’d finally feel seen. She needed to realize nothing was there between them. She was only fixated on the idea of getting married (mostly the wedding itself), because it represented getting rescued from her horrible home life, and adoration from both a husband and from the guests (which was obviously absent here) represented her desire to be seen. The second they got to his home is when it dawned on her that her life was not going to be happy, and that she was going to repeat the same cycle her parents had.

It took a few viewings but the coach says "Just breathe. Think of the Games." The groom -- an athlete/swimmer from South Africa -- married Muriel so he could stay in Australia and compete in the Olympic Games (this basically constitutes visa fraud in Australia and is quite illegal). The film's script was referring to South Africa's ineligibility to partake in the Games due to that nation's practice of apartheid (national race segregation/discrimination). However, there is a bit of confusion regarding this part of the plot since the film was made in 1994 and South Africa was able to compete in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain due to their abolishment of apartheid the year before.
@holzapfelstein7 жыл бұрын
I've watched this a few times myself and discovered that the audio is a bit off in this clip so that the lips don't match up quite right. I discovered that the groom's lips are moving at the point in question and it sounds like he says, "I'm a goner." I can't hear the coach say "Just breath" but his lips do seem to be forming those words. I can just barely make out him saying "Think of the games."
