Really nice work, what pen do you use for the signature? I’m curious because I just did my first altered magic card. Maybe after varnish will it be good?
@pokefairyrose9 күн бұрын
Micron. I sign prior to varnish but just have to wait extra long for it to fully dry! I have had cards signed after varnish too tho

If you're going to do this often, a dust mask like that one isn't enough, you should be using a filtered respirator with solvent filtering cartridges.

Thank you for the excellent videos Alyssa! I find that sometimes when I am painting on a card, I get these extremely small dried up paint spheres forming / coming off the brush. almost look like little specs of dust. Any idea how to avoid this? Also wondering about whether you find the brush strokes used to apply the base layer of grey matter in the final result. Sometimes they seem more blotchy
@pokefairyrose2 ай бұрын
Hmmm is it from the paint or coming off of the card? If I start painting over a layer before it’s fully dry sometimes I accidentally pull up little bits of paint. Or is the brush dirty? For the base layer, I just focus on making it as smooth and thin as possible. My very first layer tends to be a bit thicker, with the layers after a bit more watered down. Depends on the card- like a sky with light blue and white I would care more about a solid base layer vs something that will be painted over dark

Really educational content! As well as many others here i‘m trying to alter cards now. I‘ve done many tokens on empty playing cards and i want to keep sticking to colored pencils, do you think that i can use them on the base that im doing with your technique?
@pokefairyrose2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much!! Oh I’ve never tried colored pencil alters, that sounds fun. I wonder if you used a really matte white paint for the base that might work? Let me know how it turns out

Do you have issues with it scratching off like how you did for the text box? I came to see how other people do it because I thought I might need a different base coat or to scuff the card up a little so the paint sticks better
@pokefairyrose3 ай бұрын
The paint is pretty stuck on after fully drying though some I have more issues with certain set printings. I just use an acrylic paint for my base layer and make sure it’s fully dry before additional layers.

Please help me with yellow. It has no opacity and takes so many layers to get the color right.
@pokefairyrose4 ай бұрын
I end up lifting those spots to white first and then putting down yellow. I use titanium white in my base layer since it has better opacity. I struggle a lot with matching yellow too!
@herlocksholmes93692 ай бұрын
You could also try and paint a layer of a light brown or ochre or even orange, and then add the yellow layer on top of this. Or you could try and mix a bit of one of those colours with the yellow for better coverage.

If you are just getting started I would recommend looking at student paints (like liquitex basics), and slowly replacing with higher quality pigments over time if this is something you end up loving. Though totally depends on the art you are making! I prefer artist grade paints because I use a limited pallete and rely on color mixing, but do supplement with lower quality pigments to save money.
