I've seen these before, but seeing a video of it makes it seem actually doable, so I'm gonna try to make an alter soon (it probably won't be good, but it doesn't hurt to try). thanks for the inspiration

@nx142 not great, but I think fairly decent for my first attempt, and I think I'm probably gonna try again a couple times, thanks for asking!

Beautiful. Rebecca Guay is one of my favorite MTG artist. I actually built a deck around some of her cards.

I just did my first extended alter today, just a random ass Earthbrawn as a testXD I had only used oils before so now I see that I can water down the paint sooo much more, I was using the acrylic way too thick and made cleaning borders ugly and difficult. Thank you this was very helpful to me.

This whole video is somehow magical, really inspirational. If you happen to read this comment, could you maybe tell me if you are using any acrylics fixation spray on your finished altered cards? Thank you

Thank you so much! I do like using an aerosol varnish- satin finish by Golden is my current favorite for MtG. For more simple are extensions I sometimes just keep the card in a perfect fit sleeve instead of varnishing

How do you seal the card after altering? Alter looks amazing btw.
@pokefairyrose
@pokefairyrose 5 ай бұрын
I often use an aerosol varnish, otherwise a perfect fit sleeve helps protect the card too.

Really beautiful alter! I also want to start altering cards myself this year. I'm pretty good at painting already, but I find it a bit daunting to alter an existing artwork. So I was wondering if you have any good ideas on where to start? Like what types of cards or what style of artwork would recommend when starting? And what would be a good way to get inspiration if you wanted to add new elements to an already existing artwork?
@pokefairyrose

Hey thanks! What kind of alters do you like? The early basic lands are a great place to start (before everything was digital!) for art extensions. I sometimes look at other work the artist has done for inspiration to add to a card if you aren’t sure. I just find artists I like (like Guay, Shuler, Avon) and work on extending their art style. Lots of alter types too (from simple art extension to art replacement) depending on how creative you want to get!

@@pokefairyrose Great idea about looking on other works from the same artist - I'll try that. I also prefer the artwork from the 90's where one can often see hints of their working proces in the brush strokes etc. :)

This is beautiful work! I’m struggling with my paint drying & having too much texture. I recently got into altering MTg so I went the cheap route and got regular acrylics off of Amazon but I think I have to upgrade to golden fluid acrylics. Is the extended frame part of your alters considerably textured? Do you think it’s me not watering down the paint enough or am I just cooking in the wrong kitchen with the heavy acrylics lol. Thanks!! Great work!
@pokefairyrose
@pokefairyrose 9 ай бұрын
Hey! You can definitely use heavy body acrylics. Try a bit more water to thin the paints. There is a slight texture difference due to matte paint vs printed card, but thinning the paints keeps the texture at least flat (and less noticeable with a varnish). I use just a small amount at a time and work in super thin layers for art extensions.

Any issues with the card getting too wet?amazing work!
@pokefairyrose
@pokefairyrose Жыл бұрын
As long as I have a base layer down first and work in small amounts of water at a time I have not had an issue. Cards still lay flat and not impact on the back.

When I alter, I have to lean in really close to get a look at what im painting and be accurate. From the way camera makes it seem, it looks like your head isn't anywhere near as close to the card as mine is - basically shod I have better posture whilst painting? How are you si accurate without being close to see all the card?
@pokefairyrose
@pokefairyrose Жыл бұрын
It might just be the angle of the camera? i am already sitting a bit low in my chair compared to my desk and have natural lighting which helps. I definitely have to get close though and sometimes wear my glasses for the super detailed parts!

Do you ever prime the cards with varnish?
@pokefairyrose
@pokefairyrose Жыл бұрын
I use a satin aerosol varnish after the card dries/when done painting to seal. Have also tried some liquid gloss varnish for Pokémon but haven’t gotten it right yet. Haven’t tried that as a primer though

Are these noticeable when in a deck of cards? i.e., how much does the paint raise the surface? Could i put this is a sleeved deck and not stand out from the unaltered cards?
@pokefairyrose
@pokefairyrose Жыл бұрын
Once sleeved most of the alters are hard to notice. Some of the full art ones, if I’m not careful with thinning the paint, do feel a bit thicker though. They definitely have a different feel when not sleeved

when i water my paint it just doesnt stick to the card and never "opaquly" applies, i need like 3 layer before i stop seeing the card, whenever i do a brush stroke the paint move and you can you see the black border again, is my paint trash ?
@pokefairyrose
@pokefairyrose 10 ай бұрын
I start with a less watered down layer as a base to help paint stick. I find mixing a white and black makes a nice opaque base layer, and can use more watered down paints once first layer dries
