That would be really really cool! Thrilling to imagine a world where these ARM based Z80 ICE are as ubiquitous as blue or black pills. Dreaming of all the old hardware that would get a breath of new life and new interest is exciting! Using C/C++, or maybe even Micro python / Rust. Wild! So if you need a beta tester, I am in!

Fantastic video. The electronics side of it goes over my head unless I stop and try to remember all my CS hardware classes, but what I took away from this is that you're got a real passion for this chip, for your craft and I found it very entertaining! Thanks!

I dont make music, but I love your work, and of course love the SID chip sound. amazing, all the work that you did. I made some intros on C64. haha. using Last Ninja songs, I think The Wilderness. This song nearly used too much raster time to play in my intro, I remember having to fix something so it didn't cause scroller to get jerky.

I kinda miss the time. When everyone had the exact same hardware. So you knew that whatever you made. Could be seen and heard the way the creator intended it. These days everyone is on different CPU's GPU's and resolutions. So nobody can really appreciate how far you have pushed the envelope.

Bob yannes also made the esq-1 and esq-80 synth keyboards im sad because i used to have a sq-80 that broke it also had midi problems and the battery would get very warm and keybed problems. but i wish they were remade beautiful wavetable synth with a analog filter and 8 bit waveforms.

The DX7 is the one we all remember, but didn't the DX9 (cut down 4 OP) the DX1 (mega expensive version with massive case, better UI and weighted keyboard) and DX5 all released in 1983, and all worked pretty much the same way?

I love that you guys embrace the fact that it’s not just the internal FM chip that determines the sound, but of equal importance is the DAC. What’s even more amazing are the emulations of the other variants of the Genesis chipset!
@uhu4677
@uhu4677 3 ай бұрын
Very interesting! It's easy to overlook how much work it can be to accurately emulate this old hardware. Also I never thought the differences between chips of the same type (like 6581) could be so big. Since Chipsynth C64 can play SIDs ... is it also able to generate them?
@plgDavid

Thanks. Generarting sids is a huge can of worms due to the high resolution/non repetitiveness of the source DAW midi data

I used to have a 1986 LeBaron with the tech package. No matter how full, around every corner at any speed above 25mph or so, the computer voice would warn "Your Washer Fluid Is Low!". On a 20 minute drive, it would happen anywhere from 10-30 times... talk about madenning! lol. - Cool video, thanks for the memories!

really tempted to get it, but something is not clear to me : Can the standalone version play sid files ? tested the trial version but did not find such option. Also what would be awesome, considering the impressive current state would be some kind of included tracker so that we can record what we play and even better produce a sid file. I know that's a lot but when you encounter such a beast you are always tempted to ask for more :)
@plgDavid
@plgDavid 4 ай бұрын
Tracker would need 4 years of my life, plenty of options around for that. You can play sid files in the EMU tab (last on the right). standalone or plugin. Have a look at the video how to from the "tell me more" button.
@OlivierSimpleLife
@OlivierSimpleLife 4 ай бұрын
@@plgDavid Of course that would take a lot of time. Anyway i will go for it, since it has never been so easy to play SID music. I love the Standalone version which does not need to have a DAW and still allow to connect a midi keyboard as far as i understood. Just brilliant :)

I prefer checking the resistances between GND and VCC, if you have another good part you can compare resistances, After this checking with an oscilloscope the chip pins if they have the correct outputs, if you have another good part you can compare the signals, if you don't consult the chip datasheet.

I wish there was a simple .sid player that incorporates this enormous data on different versions of the SID chip. It would be an invaluable tool for us "non-musical" people that do C64 repairs and want to compare a suspected bad SID's output to what it should be.

But, would it be possible to imagine an ideal sid chip, something that maybe never was due to the imperfections of the manufacturing process, the component variations and even flaws in the design made by Bob himself? The chip that he envisioned but only got so far? I mean, I guess the ADSR / function generators / filters / ring modulation and all that could bee done much more perfect today rather than trying to get the most close reproduction of the sound from the existing sids?
@plgDavid
@plgDavid 6 ай бұрын
The 8580 is way closer to the intensions tbh. Otherwise Yanne's later DOC chip is also the 32 osc version of the SID he wanted, with a few (major) differences.
