Permit me please to make a very controversial statement. I think that there should only be four grades of NCO. Company sergeant, assistant platoon leader, squad or section leader and assistant squad or team leader. As for specialist positions I believe there should be four as well. Their positional ranks to mirror the line or combatant leaders.

I appreciate the video but would like to get a grasp on what these myriad enlisted ranks actually do. The officer ranks appear to conform with officer ranks the world over. It is the enlisted ranks around the world that are confusing because of the variations.

What I always found amusing is that people, even members of other branches, tend to be amazed that the Coxswains of USCG Motor Life Boats are usually junior NCO's (E-4 or 5) and it's not strictly senior NCO's or commissioned officers.

Whereas the rank of Major is two above Lieutenant, it appears an anomaly that the rank of Lieutenant General is above Major General. This is because, historically the rank of Major General, was Sergeant Major General and therefore junior to Lieutenant General

The rank of Major General used to be Sergeant Major General, a senior noncommissioned officer rank, and not a commissioned officer rank as it is today. This is why the Major General rank is lower than the Lieutenant General rank.
