One of the reasons the NCM vs Officer numbers are different are because some of those officer jobs are competing with the infinitely better paying private market. A civilian doctor is making more than a military doctor. In order to attempt to attract more doctors to fill the roles but keep them within the military structure they are fast tracked to officer status (for the pay) and given bonuses and ranks in order to remain competitive in the job market.

Miltary isn't for everyone but look at the long term if you service of 30years. In my case retired at age 50 ..... 30 years and 10 days service = 60% pension. I am Mortgage free no debt including financial portfolio. Pension is increased with inflation with many other benefits. Question to David how many Canadians can retired at early age now a days with a pension with high school education? I am blessed but did come with sacrifice 🙏 at times.

Brigades in Canada are commanded by colonels, not brigadiers. Every country has many officers of all ranks in staff positions and not in command of units or formations. What makes you believe there are more captains than sergeants?

Many junior officers, especially in the air force, do technical jobs worthy of the pay of civilian equivalents - their rank is in place so they that can get that pay.

Officers in the CAF don't serve the government, they serve their country and the citizens of Canada. Remember that before you start spewing garbage out of your mouth. Stop being so disrespectful! What do these levels mean? A sub lieutenant serving for 10 years without promotion? How do these salaries compare to similar positions in the private system?

In my time in the CAF (86-14), nobody spent more than 2 years in that rank, or more than 5 years from enrolment (or graduation from mil col) to promotion to Capt/Lt(N). Capt/Lt(N) is the working rank. Ranks lower than that are for newbies. I have no idea what they are doing with 10 increments for SLt.

Would my previous degree or experience affects the pay grade I get? I currently work with the Government of Alberta and my current salary seems close to the Captain rank

​@@oluwatosinawotundun1159 I can't say that I was ever an expert on recruiting policy. However, in the current environment, you may be able to negotiate with strength. If you are planning on being employed in your professional field, they might make you a Capt after basic training. If not, it might be Lt at the top of the pay scale. Stuff like that didn't happen in my time, though - with the exception of a Social Worker with whom I went through basic training. We were all Officer Cadets for the 13 weeks of basic, but he was promoted to full Lt upon graduation. I believe that was standard policy though - not something for which he had to negotiate. As I recall, his rank was based on the fact that he required no further training for his job and was put to work immediately in his profession. The rest of us in our platoon - pilots, air navigators, logistics officers, a couple of dietitians, one maritime engineer and one combat engineer, were promoted to 2Lt (those with degrees), or remained at OCdt (those without degrees - you could join like that in those days) until the end of occupation training. I would push for more than we got if I were you, given that the CAF is desperate for recruits.
