I think part of the reason why he felt 'less human' is due to the stress of being suddenly surrounded by dangerous invaders and needing to be ready to fight at any moment. Similar to what young soldiers mentally go through when first fighting in war. Even though you may have clear instructions of your capabilities and weapons the actual experience can be daunting and one of the ways the mind tries to protect itself is to go numb emotionally.
