When you first get the bird and you’re holding it close to your face. What stops the bird from reaching its head over and pulling out your eyeball with its beak?
@FinsandTalons15 күн бұрын
We put anklets and jesses on the birds legs, so it can't reach up with it's feet (feet would cause the most injury). We also don't hold them real close to our face when the are newly trapped, but they aren't usually offensive, they usually only want to jus get away at first, then they start trusting us.

Hoods are such an important part of falconry, as a welfare tool as much as anything else. I have sensory issues and loud noises cause me to get overwhelmed, so I wear noise cancelling headphones. Raptors' eyes are so powerful that sensory overload in some places is inevitable. The hood makes it possible for raptors to coexist with humans! I always look forward to your videos and seeing Xena progress, keep up the good work

@@FinsandTalonsIt is in serious falconers, but with some 'weekend falconers' with HHs especially there's an attitude that they don't 'need' to hood their bird. I was squirrel hawking the other day, when my red-tail make a b-line to a tree that was 50 feet away. I heard the constant sound of bells, which I knew she had caught something. I ran up to where she was hoping she had caught a fox squirrel. Instead she had nailed a great horned owl and they were both splayed out on their backs with their talons interlocking. I had to pry the owl's talons off of my birds feet and then toss a chick to the side to have my bird release the owl.

@@FinsandTalonsI am! We have a ton of invasive grey squirrels who have almost completely wiped out our native reds, so squirrel hunting in general is big here, but lots of people in falconry are worried about bites. @@rookbirdblues Do many fly Finnish Goshawks on squirrels or any other big Gos?

@@FinsandTalonsOne of my mentors flies an Albidus gos on squirrels and catches absolutely loads of them, but goshawks on squirrel isn't really very big in the wider community.
