Watching this for some pre race inspiration. I'm swimming this in two weeks. This will be my 5th time swimming Alcatraz and a Bay Area native. Great job and experience.

Love this video! You guys are so cute! My husband and I are doing this for the first time in September and it’s nice to see a fun couple enjoy the race together instead of all the super competitive dudes showboating thru the whole video 😂

Hey Melissa, I forgot to ask you in my last question. Did you only use the cap they gave you or did you wear an additional cap underneath? If you did, what thickness was it? Thanks!
@makmethods32482 жыл бұрын
I just used the cap they gave me and brought a spare that I kept tucked in my wetsuit in case I broke one. My sis wore 2 but I wasn’t comfortable trying that first time during the race because I had never done that before.

Most people that are not use to swim in cold water buy a neoprene cap that velcro under your chin and the standard silicon cap above it. It keeps your whole head warm, and prevent water from splashing into your ears. I wear ear plugs, then neoprene cap, then silicon cap

The stadium was insane because the amount of stairs…it was 600ft elevation!!!

Great video. Do you have ro do burpees as a penalty if you cant complete an obstacle?
@makmethods32482 жыл бұрын
Technically yes. However if you do the “open” heats (i.e. not age group/elite/competitive races), they don’t really bother you about it. I’ve done these with groups of friends and we never do the burpees because we’re just there for fun!

I do this in August 2022…and I’m nervous as I’m not a great swimmer.
@makmethods32482 жыл бұрын
I absolutely would not do this if you haven’t trained and aren’t a strong swimmer. It’s dangerous and very strong currents! HARD even for seasoned and strong swimmers!Y sister and I trained up to 6 months before we actually raced.

@@makmethods3248 hi Mak! Wow. Thanks for replying. My wife and I have been training for 4 months swimming 4x a week. Unfortunately there is no beach near us so we have to use a pool (better than nothing I suppose). We can do 104 laps non-stop (1.5 miles) and we are trying to get up to 120 before the race. 2 questions for you. We will be flying in from North Carolina. Is it possible to rent a wetsuit in San Fran prior to the event (what mil was your suit)? And 2, in your opinion what is going to be our biggest obstacle since we can only train in a pool? Thank you so much. I’ve watched your other vids and I hope your health is catching up to your spirit!
@makmethods32482 жыл бұрын
@@fsmit80 hello! So great that you’re training so much! There are several dive/surf shops locally that you can usually rent from. I’d suggest searching surf shops near the the pier area and calling to ensure you can rent. In Monterey, you can. I’m not as familiar with SF. 2nd question: the surge will 100% be your enemy, especially not able to train in the ocean. MUCH different. In our case in this video, the surge was coming in from our right, so we had to adapt to only breathe on our left. When we’d breathe right, we’d inhale water. My sister and I both ended up getting REALLY sick from that. I’d also recommend not focusing so much on distance in a pool (now that you’ve worked that up) as much as I would say try working some longer distance sprints. Since you can’t train in the ocean, sprint swimming as far as you can will help to compensate for making you stronger when the surge comes around. I’m a frequent open water swimmer in Monterey bay and I somewhat still didn’t feel prepared for SF waters. Pool and ocean is a whole different ballgame. Hope that helps!

I hadnt planned on taking mine, but it looks like some people do so i might now you said the wrong gopro settings, what settings do you think you should have used?
@makmethods32482 жыл бұрын
Lots of people had them. Some on their heads (which I don’t have the guts to do), wrists and chest. I think it’d be cool to use the chest mount backwards so the GoPro is facing up out of the water forwards on your back to catch the whole view while you’re swimming. But then you can’t really reach it to turn it off. I’m so glad I had it for the footage, but I was torn between wanting to stop and turn the camera on and off but wanting to focus and race as fast as I could.
@TMS5192 жыл бұрын
@@makmethods3248 thats a good idea i wonder how it would fit/feel wearing it backwards. Mine attaches to a dive mask made by gopro to it wouldnt go anywhere unless someone knocked the mask of me.

@@TMS519 I want to try and recruit someone I know to volunteer to kayak so they can just follow me and have the GoPro!😂

@@TMS519 Wrist worked pretty well. I’m gonna play with a couple other ideas, like the head, during training. But overall I like the quick access of the wrist to turn it on and off and not drain the battery.
