I remember meeting a girl with a abusive ex bf. Horrible sort. Mistake on earth. One day he randomly showed up. Assaulted her. And....I saw RED. I beat him up, pretty savagely. Sent him to the hospital. Cracked rib. Broken arm. Beat up face. Broken knee. Etc. I would think she would thank me for defending her, sadly no. She shouted at me that he was still the father of her child. She slapped me & pushed me away. And didn't wanna see me again. I don't regret what I did. He deserved worse really. And I got away with it freely. Cause well, I'm not just anyone. I have powerful friends. I loved that girl, but oh well.😔❤️

It's sad how real this issue is. So many people have never had to struggle like this and will never understand it and treat it like a virus or something completely negative. It's sad how little we actual support each other.

As a Christian & possible victim of abuse from my own childhood and marriage, spoken from the heart that thoughtless prayer can be very dangerous, and can carry no blessing at all if your spirit does not sense the danger. I can imagine thats how many kids get caught in psychological "acceptance" of the situation. Fear God, fear your father's righteousness & feast the food at the table he brings. These things were never explicitly told to me, but its like setting the table. Nothing is said, you are expectes to sit and healthy or not becomes the simplest form of community you have: your family.

Very insensitive comment. Not everyone with kids are "popping up" kids. Many people are from broken marriages, divorcing or running away from an abusive spouse. They start the right way but things change. I was a single mom going thru divorce. I had a good job and never needed to count on government assistance, except once, btwn jobs for about 3 months. Today my two sons are college graduates with high honors, I own my own house, and I refrain to pass judgement on the poor and down on their luck. You may find yourself in that position one day, be kind. I am also a student, at 57 getting my bachelor's degree, unemployed bc of covid. My struggles are real but do not diminish other people's struggles.

@AmeliaDevitaDixon I'm not going to switch the topic to you when I was clearly talking about people having kids despite being poor and unprepared. Also yes, if you got a degree, life insurance, investment, and insisted your ex husband did the same before marriage...it wouldn't have been as stressful. That's the truth. Regardless, good luck on your degree and congratulations on your successful sons. May your relationship with each other always be blessed.

I kind of felt like this was the show's way of saying that women can be abusers too. The way she talked down to him like she was scolding a toddler. "Drink your juice and be quiet"? They announced that they were engaged to each other. but neither one acted happy about it. It looked like verbal abuse disguised as banter.. It was very uncomfortable watching how they interacted with each other.

That $1000 is supposed to get us food, diapers, wipes, clothes, toys, cat food and litter, transportation, etc. I can barely stay above water as a single mom. I get zero help from anyone, no assistance, no child support. Its tough. Worrying everyday

Which is why the support should be provided for people like this who are trying to do better. Just because you *can* live with your parents doesn’t mean the situation is a suitable one. Dealing with regular life/ work stuff and then being subjected to worse than roommate behavior of varying levels from verbally to physically to mentally abusive. You feel stuck bc you can’t move forward bc you’re being held back. And not only do you not have the support you *have* but that support hinders you further and further. Just be grateful you’ve never had to deal with that

Instead of starving to death, i use food stamps. Why have a system if ppl cant use it when they need to. Im ashamed to have to use it, i cant even buy paper plates it has to be food. It cant be hot food. It cant be alcohol, just edible non luxury items. I try not to be embarrassed but i still get looks.

One great thing about this show is, it humanises both the boyfriend and the mother, wh are deeply dysfunctional and toxic people, but they are not just pantomime villains. The mom is clearly narcissistic and selfish, but at the same time she really did try, at least sometimes. And the boyfriend is controlling and an abuser, but its clear that he himself was raised in an abusive environment and he really just doens't understand what a loving family looks like.

I haven't seen this show, so I don't really know what I'm talking about.... But not wanting to have a child is not the same as not feeling responsiple for the ubringing of said child once the child is born. This guy seems like an ass. But, many parents that didn't initially want a child (including many women) will fight for custody over said children, simply because they feel it's their responsibility to do so.

I'm not sure what to make of this episode. She lets her ex bring his (adult) friends to a child's birthday party, and then says nothing when they bring alcohol. She invites her mother, knowing full well that the woman can't control herself. At the end, when she gets evicted, I almost buried my head in my hands. Those women who rented her the apartment were really GIVING her quite a lot, and she had to ruin it all for herself.

Really confused about the father, Hank. On one hand the show paints him, in a flashback, as a wifebeater, abusing (even though he's never actually seen hitting the mom in the flashback) Alex's mom. On the other, he's always seen in the present as anything but an abuser (he's clearly not abusive towards his new family), aren't abusers supposed to be serial repeat offenders, like Sean? And finally Alex gives EVERYONE a second chance (Nate, Sean, her psycho mom, the black lawyer woman, etc), everyone BUT her own father who's never once abused her (not even in her flashback) and has apparently clearly cleaned up his act. So what's so special/evil about him that even Sean of all people (her actual abuser) gets a second chance but not him? Seems utterly arbitrary snd capricious. The mom is (and is portrayed as always been) clearly insane, no wonder Hank could not deal with her...
