This is a wonderful moment, when she takes back control of her life. The car is more than a means of transportation - it is a symbol of freedom, ability and the future. Even obtaining it, she bargains with the seller. It takes a lot of inner strength to bargain - if you had low esteem you would probably settle for the asking price. However, to be confidently saying "I'll give you 400 for it" in a way that makes the seller think it is a 'take it or leave it' offer takes a lot of self-confidence, which she had only recently gained. A great moment of realisation.

Serious question here. What was it about this particular show out of all the other countless movies and programs that seemed to make this one so relatable to such a diverse audience? I noticed that it was getting alot of buzz and did some investigating and found that it was just a new spin on an old story. No new real ground was broke here nor was a fresh perspective offered. It was entertaining and watchable but all things considered it like the roots of what could have become a sitcom back in the day. Just hoped someone could offer me a different POV to help me appreciate something I might have missed.

My thoughts are this: In most stories there is almost never any 'new ground'. What matters is if people feel emotionally connected - and I do think this series emotionally connects with most people very well. The series is really based on the old-age 'journey' way of storytelling - ie. following a person through all their trials, challenges, failures, hopes and successes - such that we cannot help but sympathise with her plight, and imagine we were there with her. We do connect with people who tell their stories because as people we need to be empathetic in order to understand. The Maid is a very well produced, acted and paced yes, populated by characters that make decisions we might make ourselves, in environments and events that we could have easily experienced ourselves, and overall it is also the fact that people can relate to the journey, and feel like they know her like a real person, that makes it so relatable.

I loved this series and cried 50% of watching it. The book, the fictional film interpretation and acting does a great job of portraying desperation, especially the desperation of a mother (a single mom of a young child in poverty with a dysfunctional family running from an abusive relationship). The portrayal hits deep for me and unlike most things I’ve seen. I suspect a lot of people involved in its making had some deep, complex capacities to bring this story so deep :)
