Worked as a PQS for 5 and a bit years post uni, absolutely hated it by the end (although I got chartered at the end of it). I didn't mind the nuts and bolts of the job, just hated the long hours, difficult clients, spending a huge chunk of time being a glorified post box and the arse covering involved in practically all projects I was on. I switched to the public sector almost 3 years ago (currently work for a local authority, still as a QS), I have flexi hours, work place culture is worlds apart, much more laid back, clients are 80 percent internal and a lot more understanding and less adversarial. Downside is that I'm probably bringing home 10/15% less than I would be in the private sector, but this is massively offset by the points I have just mentioned (work life balance being a huge one - if I want to finish at 3pm, 4pm or 5pm then I can and no permissions are needed, I don't spend the whole weekend having Monday fear), oh and my pension is far superior now.

This was put so clearly; I find myself fitting in to all these three scopes in some way and it is the best way to describe one's quality in the project management role...

chat gpt summary: In the video, Penny, the Operations Lead at Laka, shares her career journey and insights into the operations role. She describes it as a dynamic position involving analysis, planning, and collaboration across various departments like finance and HR. Penny initially wanted to be a translator but shifted to studying Business Studies at her father's suggestion. After completing her undergraduate and master's degrees, she faced the challenge of securing a job, eventually opting for an internship in a startup instead of pursuing a traditional banking career. She reflects on the intense work schedule she maintained during her internship while still working at Apple. Despite skepticism from family and friends, she found fulfillment in this new path. Penny explains that her role evolved over time, allowing her to take on more responsibilities and eventually land a position in operations. She emphasizes the importance of being passionate, adaptable, and a team player in a startup environment. She advises newcomers to engage with colleagues and learn from their experiences to thrive in their roles. Overall, her story highlights the value of following one's interests and being open to change in one’s career.

so have your dad pay for business school, get sad about working at a bank, and quit somehow and still survive and go into ops.

This was really insightful, I’m left a bit puzzled as I’m intending on taking a course for Property Studies as opposed to Construction Management which leads to Honours in Quantity Surveying. You mentioned that you left your QS role and took on a Project Management role, how do the two roles differ? If you’re also able to guide me, which course would you suggest one takes if they do intend on being a Property Developer?

Quantity Surveyors should concentrate on Technical Auditing. At least auditing of around US $ 12 Trillion Government funded constructions as Check & Balance for Govt. expenditure. It is done by Financial Accountants only for more than 100 years. The loss in these audited constructions reached US $ 4 Trillion per year in 2008,according to Transparency Internationals. This is an affront to the profession, as Quantity Surveyors are expected to give value for money.

A Quantity Surveyor, at professional level is an Accountant of a Construction project. So, it implies that a Quantity Surveyor should be able to give the maximum possible value for the money spend by their clients. Unfortunately, this is not achieved in the construction industry. The loss owing to frauds and mismanagement is estimated to be 10-30% of the project costs. Happening in all countries. It is an affront to the profession. Therefore, it is a requirement that all Quantity Surveyors and their unions should concentrate on Technical Auditing. Auditing is considered to be the “Check &Balance Mechanism “for Government expenditure. Carried out by Financial Accountants only and they maintain a firm grip and lot of financial vested interests. Govt. funded constructions were simple structures when auditing started a century ago and it was easy to audit. Govt. funded construction now, is huge, complex, done in several phases with complicated Contractual arrangements. Auditing such constructions is difficult even for highly experienced construction professionals. The loss owing to frauds and mismanagement in these audited (Financial) Govt. constructions is a world record. It was reported as US $ 4 Trillion per year by Transparency Internationals. Global Organistion of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) submitted a proposal in 2015 to have an additional Technical Audit with a functioning Technical Auditing mechanism to salvage this avoidable loss in public funds. This is a good opportunity for Quantity Surveyors to audit around US $ 12 Trillion Govt. funded constructions per year. There a is scope for other constructions as well as the loss is estimated to be 10 -30% of the project costs. There is a big opportunity (in excess of millions per year) for Quantity Surveyors to work as Technical Auditors. Can you please reply, I am in UK immigrant from India, I am really interested in QS 27 years old at the moment and saving to study QS. I have done business study have no experience in construction industry but have always interest in. I am a Restaurant manager at the moment. But want to do something more professional. Can you please help in guide what should be the first step to start. There is a degree to do straight masters as an Qs for a year do you think. Will it be a good enough to get a job or you says it will be waste of time?? Should I got to study bachelors first which I really Dont want to give 3 years and that much of money

Hi, I would speak to the university offering the masters course and pose the question to them as they will likely have had students in similar positions to yours. QS’ are generally in demand so my gut feeling is there will be junior jobs available from completing the masters course but it is always difficult to predict the future and what the job market will look like. I would definitely speak to the university as a first step. All the best with it.
