The term dental hygiene-therapist is not a recognised (protected) official title by the General Dental Council. Anyone can call themselves a dental hygiene-therapist. It is important to understand you are either a dental hygienist or a dental therapist who undertakes the skills of a dental hygienist. Those who generally qualified post 2002 will tend to be Dental Therapists now (although some hygiene only schools/programs still exist). You take your highest qualification title, in which in this case would be Dental Therapist. The same concept applies to a dentist who will undertake the skills of a therapist and a hygienist. They do not call themselves a dentist-hygiene/therapist.

Thanks for adding to the comments section. Found the “anyone can call themselves...” a bit patronising but might just be me. Channels all about sharing so happy for you to add value wherever you can. All the best.

I am student of B.S Dental. Our course subjects are exactly similar to that of BDS and our university also issue us a certificate of dental therapists. Our degree name is dental technology. Can we work as dental therapist in UK and what would be requirements for that?

Hi, whilst I’d love to be able to answer this I would send an email to the General Dental Council to ask.

The answer is generally No, you tend to have to restudy for the full 5 years BDS programme, although some universities may allow you to apply for a 4 year programme if you have the correct grades upon completion of a BSc in Dental Therapy. Some universities however are starting to introduce a programme where everyone will start off as a dental therapy student and have the option after 1st/2nd year to move onto BDS programme for the remaining years or to complete a final year if they wish to leave as a dental therapist. Each university programme is different and it is down to the university of how they run their programme. Best bet is to contact Dental School Admissions at the universities you are interested in attending of options.

Thanks for reaching out Laura, you are right, they can be very scarce and unfortunately it can just be pot luck if a position comes up! Our suggestion would be to really focus on the course especially paediatric/special care aspect. Try to get as much experience within these areas as possible. Dentistry is changing so much at the moment with covid so it is hard to advise for 3 years time, as dentistry could be very different then. Community practice is all about being part of a team so a good idea would be to try get involved with as many team opportunities at uni. Perhaps a sports team or find out if there is council within the dental school. Hope this helps, any more questions let us know. All the best for September!
