Just an idea or option. I have a bucket I put bga chips in. When I need stannous I put like 4-5 in a beaker with hcl and warm it up. Not only do I get stannous chloride I also clean up some bga chips for processing. Sometimes I process a bunch of bga chips then you wish stannous had a better shelf life. I use a dark brown bottle with a squeeze dropper pipette. That may get me a few more days but it never lasts more than two weeks

While you could do this with a computer power supply, if you are going to put the time and effort and silver investment into this, I would highly recommend using a decent power supply that allows you to monitor and adjust the voltage and amperage. I built a very inexpensive cell but spent 50 bucks on the supply and Im glad I did, as I can now adjust things and find what settings give the best results. Just please if you do try this, do more research than just watching one video, and be safe and responsible with your actions. Wear all personal protection, and remember nitric acid can kill you if used improperly.

I'm in the middle of processing the absolute strangest batch of silver (?) contacts I've ever worked with. There's definitely some tungsten in there as I can see a grid/waffle pattern on some that are no longer dissolving, but it wasn't there before I began soaking in nitric. I torched them all to red and none showed any indication of solder so I can't see that having filled in the pattern. Why it only appeared after soaking in nitric baffles me. Lots of silver coming out but when I cement on copper it isn't cementing out like normal (ie grey sludge like powder) but it is forming these very shiny gelatinous flakes that hold together like steel wool. They're intermixed with a very dark, almost black powder that if I didn't know better I would swear was palladium. There's also a lot of black residue left in the liquid after I leach out the silver and it is not acting like any tungsten residue I have encountered before. The ONLY other time I have encountered anything like this was a few years ago in one of my electro cells. The silver was not forming regular crystals but a similar shiny mass like today, only back then there was no black sludge mixed in with it. I found out that run of contacts was over 25% palladium so I'm guessing that this batch also has a high % of PGM. The black dust left over that doesn't dissolve in the nitric really makes me think of ultra fine gold as it has this very slight purple cast to it in just the right light. I had to stop processing because it was consuming so much nitric I ran out and I am in the middle of making another litre. This is just so weird that I am thinking I might just take everything that cements out on copper and pour into a bar and send off for XRF.

Hey man, thanks for this video! I've been collecting breakers for a few months and have built up a decent stash of contacts. I know I'm not going to turn a profit after subtracting all of the time and supplies, but I really want to hold that ball of silver just so I can say "I made this out of trash!"
@dustyjones89884 ай бұрын
I don't know the actual names of the different types of breaker box things but in my experience, the ones with a switch that have little braided copper wires attached to the arms that hold the contacts are most definitely a very low percentage of silver. Not even 10 percent. I don't even bother with those. The ones that are silver are in the breaker box thing that has a single spring button on the top. The contacts in those are always at least 85 percent silver. Sometimes almost pure.

I saw the old guys tinker with this production at home in the winter. Just a kid in 1970, and remember the cartridge we got were all made of thick paper with a paper cap pressed in the front. Not watertight. The wadding was excess wool. They made them either in slugs or buck to shoot the seals so they would not take the fishing lines when fishing the fjord. The lines were very expensive and having a single or double barrel shotgun was a cheap way to insure the fishing gear. As a bonus they somtimes got a excellent shark bait from the seal.

Hey there I am new to doing this and was wondering if you could tell me what the different colors of sediment or sludge are and also does any of the silver dissolve and what happens when you accidentally use pure silver. I've read that the silver doesn't dissolve yet if you touch it it certainly does

Your video is misinforming! There are two types of MLCCs: NME (Noble Metal Electrode) containing Silver and Palladium, and BME (Base Metal Electrode) containing Nickel and Copper. The BME type was developed as a cheaper alternative MLCC, for use when less performance is acceptable. They went into production in the mid '90es and became fairly widespread from year 2000 onwards. The two types are easy to separate using a relative strong magnet (from a large loudspeaker or a microwave oven; not a Neodymium magnet). The high Nickel content in the BME type makes them magnetic. (Nickel is worth almost three times more than Copper). Be careful not to confuse MLCCs with Surface Mounted Resistors. They look almost the same, but usually have small (3 or 4 digits) numbers on top of them. These Resistors contain valuable Ruthenium. The common two stage hydrometallurgical process recovers all Tin and Lead from the solder used on both types. The BME type yields Nickel, Copper, Titanium, and small amounts of other metals. The NME type yields Palladium and Silver, as well as lesser amounts of other metals. For the past 10 years I have, contradictory to your claim, recovered well over 1 kg of Palladium from MLCCs!
@zero-waste5 ай бұрын
@@BackyardScrapping. According to comments from other viewers, most of them have been misled by your video to believe MLCCs does not contain any values at all; i.e. it's just a waste of time to attempt to recover any values from them. You should clearly have pointed out that you were processing BME type MLCCs (magnetic). The values (primarily Nickel and Copper, besides Tin from the solder) are extracted by electrowinning. I'm a full time scrapper/refiner, working from home for the past 12 years. In my garden shed I make US$ 250,000 a year using homebuilt advanced equipment, so I'm certainly not a novice. I get several tons of e-waste every month, and I process every single MLCC, no matter how small it is. I never waste time picking electronic components off the boards by hand. Everything is processed hydrometallurgical in fast and effective ways. Neither do I process components in batches of less than 50 kg.
@zero-waste5 ай бұрын
@@BackyardScrapping. "The misleading part" is that your video leds viewers to the wrongful conclusion that all MLCCs are worthless. Nowhere in this video are you clearly stating that contrary to Noble Metal Electrode MLCCs (NME type) the magnetic (BME type) does not contain Precious Metals, but solely Basic Metals. Just read the comments from other viewers; all thank you for your information and some indeed regret having spent lots of time picking MLCCs off PCB boards! Even the title of the video implies that MLCCs are not worth messing with! Well, some of them certainly are very valuable. Regarding your last question: I usually don't pay for e-waste, despite getting tons of it every month. Even if I paid you for MLCCs (minimum quantity 50 kg) for sure you wouldn't like to pay the expensive freight cost to Europe. You'll also drown in paperwork; besides you'll probably need an export license due to the strict international rules for export of hazardous material. Just to mention, a couple of years ago I got a very good offer for 800 tons of e-waste. They would pay me for taking it, although the amount would not cover the whole international shipping cost. However, the paperwork needed, and the rules for storage of the many containers filled with hazardous e-waste, was so overwhelming that I declined.
