The Ohio State Health Department has failed to uphold OSHA standards in regards to properly wearing masks. You absolved yourselves of responsibility for detrimental outcomes by stating the masks citizens are wearing, are not PPE. However, when you mandated everyone wear masks to protect everyone else, you made them PPE. Therefore, not only must you provide proper PPE, you must provide education on the proper use and dangers of masks. Education must include: donning, doffing, disposing, how often to change, impress the importance of never touching the mask and why. If you are going to allow cloth masks, you must provide proper disinfecting instructions. As it stands now, most hand wash and air dry. This allows for possible colonization of any infectious material left behind. Masks could be boiled and placed in lingerie bag to be quickly dried in a hot dryer. This would mitigate colonization, but also the microfibers which could be inhaled into the lungs. I believe your failure to properly educate the public on mask use will have detrimental effects this flu season. Anyone with eyes on an average trip to Kroger can see too many citizens do not know how to handle a mask possibly contaminated with infectious particles. Employees are often seen readjusting a mask they have worn for hours. Customers do the same. Most remove and put in pockets, purses, glove boxes, etc. only to put back on at the next errand location. You know, as well as I, that a mask becomes a vector for any viral, bacterial, allergenic particles that may land on a mask; the longer it is worn. Especially, if it becomes wet from sweat, spit, and condensation. Thus, making it useless for the intended purpose. A flu vaccine may mitigate susceptibility to getting the flu, but only if manufacturers managed to guess the correct strain. The other potential pathogens are not preventable through a flu vaccine. The vaccine is also less effective in our older population, the same population we are protecting by wearing masks. I am also concerned about students wearing masks all day at school. My own children tell me “everyone at school “ are constantly adjusting their masks. They remove masks and put on tables, lanyards, some just pull down to their chins to eat. Our kids may, or may not have serious reactions to Covid-19, but they do to the flu. By ignoring your role in educating the public on the proper use of the masks you have forced the citizens to wear; you put all Ohio’s citizens at risk for deleterious respiratory consequences. Your enforcement of the mask mandate puts all Ohioans at risk not only for Covid-19, but all other possible respiratory infections. Do your job; either educate and provide proper PPE, or end the mask mandate. Unless, the inevitable increase of respiratory infections are the main goal of the mandate. Anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of masks recognizes the logical outcomes for a public Ignorant of the fact that improper use of masks can have detrimental effects on their own health.
