Cass Gilbert, the "Father of the Modern Skyscraper," was born in a home on this site in downtown Zanesville. After studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Gilbert apprenticed with prominent architectural firm McKim, Mead, and White. The success of his first major public building, the 1895 Minnesota State Capitol, established his national reputation. Gilbert's influential 1912 Woolworth building in New York, at 792 feet, was then the world's tallest building. His other architectural achievements include the United States Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C., the U.S. Custom House in New York, and the Arkansas and West Virginia state capitols.
