It bothers me that my spare tire is 4 inches less in diameter than the tires on my car. The car has 215/55R18’s and the spare is 125/70R16. I’ve checked the tire info tag on the B-post. It’s as it should be according to the tag. It is a front wheel drive car. I’m concerned about damaging the transaxle if I run mismatched tires on the front. Obviously the engineers didn’t think it was a problem. I know it feels funky as hell with it on the rear. Should I be concerned?

The Canadian WRX’s with the included temp spare states you shouldn’t use it on the front, only the rear. So this one is ok ? Thanks…..

I have a Jeep Gladiator with 18" wheels and 35" tires. The spare is the default 17" wheel with 35" tire. So based on your video I think this would be fine?

I just purchased a 2010 Camaro. It never shipped with a spare. There aren’t many options to consider. I did my research, and decided to go with Modern Spare.

4:15 I noticed that he placed the jack parallel with the door, so that it is entirely underneath the car. Wow! What a brilliant idea. Scissor-jacks are prone to tilt underneath Teslas when they are placed in the standard position, with half underneath and half sticking out (basically at 90 degrees to how he does it here). The tilt happens because Teslas put more weight on jacks than other cars of the same weight. The battery pack is very rigid, so when you lift one tire, you end up lifting both tires on the same side of the car at the same time. Watch any video explaining how to rotate the tires on a Tesla to see this. Practically speaking, this means the standard 1-1/2 ton jacks you find with many roadside kits won’t cut it. This also means you will put a lot of stress on an appropriately sized 2.5-ton scissor-jack when you place it the “standard” way under the car. Good job Modern Spare. Yes, I’m nerding out on this seemingly insignificant detail. I’ve spent a fair amount of time trying to figure out how to change a Tesla’s tire or fix a flat. I’ve had the wonderful experience of getting a blowout, on a Saturday night. Tesla ain’t open on Sunday, so I had to wait til Monday morning to get it fixed. Tesla charged me almost $500. Had I not been under warranty, I would have been billed $175 for the tow. You see how this can add up quickly and be a massive inconvenience.

There are plenty of small donut spare tires smaller than the original tire/wheel diameters. it does pull to one side due to the smaller size. No problem at all for driving short distances.

Is it my computer, but the audio is muffled and difficult to listen to? That was not the case for the animated video about aspect ration; much clearer audio.

I thought you weren’t supposed to install compact spares on from wheels. 😮 They experience a lot more side force during turns than the rear. Maybe I’m just cautious but I would install the spare at the rear then swap the rear wheel to the front for safety. I don’t really like your example showing a front tire without at least mentioning if the modern spare is rated for that much side force especially on such a heavy vehicle.

How is the jack stored so it doesn’t rattle when the car is in motion?

My Honda Civic had a small spare tire. Had to use it once to limp to a tire place/gas station to get a proper size tire installed. I did notice the car tilting a little bit so you want to get off the spare ASAP. But the smaller tire worked fine.

In other words, aspect ratio is the thickness (or the height) of the side walls of the tire.

Ideally want you want to do is have the spare match the outer diameter of your regular tire. Also make sure the spare clears the the brakes etc

This was an ah ha moment. Had no idea: no spare in ATS !! Thank you for including the jack! As I was warned some don't include that crucial basic part. Car will be fitted with this before I get back to travels after pandemic. Being a woman traveling solo, I refuse to be stranded in the middle of nowhere, waiting for a passerby just to get a lift... For cell service .... To call a tow truck??? I think not. Will be ordering ASAP!
