Slow down a bit and look at the piece you are splitting first. Any knots or limb remainders ,have that end facing the wedge first. You will have a lot less stringy pieces you have to pull apart. I have an empty 200L drum next to me and put the first half of a large split on there instead of trying to hold it on the off side table. Makes an enjoyable job even better. I have one of these and love it.

Files only work it one direction. Forward stroke only...not backwards. 30 degrees..then check your depth gauges.. Buy a good depth gauge tool and good flat file. Use a proper file holder too and learn how to use it properly. Try and keep it to 3 or 4 good strokes on cutters so chain wears evenly. If your saw is still not cutting straight get your bar dressed. There's a lot to learn about chainsaws. A very high maintenance tool. Australian hardwood rules! Always use good quality bar oil too...never use sump oil. If your saw is old and getting hard to start...clean the gauze spark arrester on your muffler...people always overlook this or don't know it's there. It will be blocked with carbon.

Careful maintenance is needed, not very high maintenance, in my opinion. I'm cutting 8 to 10 hours a day, every day. I sharpen the chain in the evening, sometimes in the middle of the day too, depending on the wood ... Only takes a couple of minutes 👍

I just bought my Champion 27 ton splitter and had noticed a lot of videos had different splitters. The old style has the hydro filter mounted upside down, the jack slides in a holder welded to the I beam and you have to pull a pin out, the slide to make it vertical was a REAL pita. I noticed on the newer models they have one bolt, no slide crap to flip it. SO nice. The kickstand you pull a pin and kick it up. And... the wedge is taller. It's about an inch taller but makes all the difference in the world. Yes, I bought the old one first, watched videos, (yes I should have watched first), then returned it to HD, since I only used it about a week. I brought home the new model and LOVE it. What a difference. Love watching all these splitting videos. I'll be splitting away this weekend!

I have had the larger size 34 ton I think it is for a few years now. The Champion engine does seem to want to run. It starts every year without much fuss. I just wish it had a controllable throttle - I hate going from zero to full when it’s cold and there are lots of times I’d like it to just idle while I’m grabbing a big log or moving some of the split that fell around me. The original pump suction line failed in me, it got very hard and the combination of the hose clamp, the internal spring to prevent collapse under suction and the vibrations went through it very fast once it started - once it sucks in air it will turn the oil to foam exceptionally fast. I’ve used mine in both horizontal and vertical orientation. Split 36” diameter rounds of 18” red oak with no more effort than you see in this video. However the supplied pin to lock it is not strong enough, at least on the 34 ton, and will bend - replace that too. I keep a jig of old engine oil and put a little bit on the beam under the wedge where it slides - if i remember to get it coated before shutting down the steel won’t rust in you after the paint comes off. The 34 ton weighs in around 560 lbs, so you might want to invest in some sort of “trailer dolly” for moving it around unless you have a ball hitch or some such. I had to tow mine about 20 miles to get it home - go slow and it rides well enough. However if you have to raise and lower the hitch much, the bar with the pins is annoying…when you get the dolly to move it around, get a bolt in crank leg - I don’t know about the balance on the smaller splitter, but it’s a little hitch heavy for holding it up and fussing with the pin holes - certainly doable but that upgrade is on my list next. Last item, the ram cylinder does get hot, uncomfortably so to the bare hand while working (nice through gloves on a cold day though) So wound I recommend? For the price, yes. Basic solid machine - wish it had a throttle though. I get tired before it does every time.

I just picked up the same splitter a few weeks ago and I agree with everything you said. The table on the engine side should stick out more and also go over the engine to help protect it. There should also be a shield to put over the hydraulic filter, those two changes would be a great addition. For my personal use I think the cycle time is perfect, it's fast enough that I'm not waiting around and slow enough that I'm not rushing, which is when accidents happen.

I agree that the hydraulic filter should be protected by a light deck that could hold a half round and the table on both sides could be a bit wider. As for a four-way split, head I think the compound head on this splitter is by far the best head for a moving head splitter I have seen or used. In my personal opinion the only time a multi way split head is useful is if the split head is stationary and the pieces are being pushed all the way through. This is the perfect splitter for my firewood business. The cycle time is exceptional and the light weight makes it easy to take to the wood or move as the pile moves. I would guess I have split more than 40 cords with mine in the last 16 months. Had a cylinder fail that was promptly replaced. Runs like a dream.

@tombutler7296
@tombutler7296 Ай бұрын
@@Giantpumpkinswitheric Mostly I run a firewood processing business. I try not to take possession of the wood. I would guess on average I split around 6 cords a month. So I guess I really underestimated how many cords I have run across the splitter. It must be closer to 80 or 90 cords. I used to split wood by hand and felt like no splitter could keep up. Then my boss bought a 27 Ton Champion and there was no doubt it was faster than by hand and I was not as tired so I could spilt longer. When I "retired" I bought my own. I figure it takes me 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on if I have to go vertical for the big rounds, to process a cord.

I hope to grow a giant next year!!!! After fighting just about every pumpkin issue and winning I have what I think is bacterial leaf spot and if it is they say to rotate out curbits for 2-3 years. Do you know if that is in the same area or anywhere? I live on 8 acres and wondering if I could grow in another spot?
@Giantpumpkinswitheric
@Giantpumpkinswitheric 2 ай бұрын
You could make another area and rotate. Or I have seen some growers plant mustard and then till the mustard under. When the mustard starts to rot it releases gasses and fumigates through soil and kills bacteria in the soil.

Good season! Too bad it went light, but nice to have an official weight on it. Also, weigh-offs are always a good time. They must subtract the weight of the lifting ring, strap and rope from the final weight. They always remove all of that before showing the final weight at the weigh-offs I go to. I like that because you can get a picture of it on the scale without those things on top.
