Would have been better to call them Caprices. Do I hear a bit of pianistic showmanship? I mean Reger, not the excellent pianist.

I love how Reger hints at a classical Haydn-like theme at 0:40 but immediately modulates away in a totally non-classical way two seconds later (0:42)

great reger pieces. love reger. would be even better if the pianist didn't play every p as mf and ignore every second other dynamic marking... (reger has such amazing and meaningful dynamic contrasts, for example at 24:09 the pianist does a great job paying attention to the subito fs (even tho the p still sounds at least mf) which *greatly* enhances the expression, and then completely ignores the markings a few seconds later 24:24, as with most other passages. kind of a shame since otherwise the recording really isn't bad at all)

"I was in a very extreme moment of my research in music, so therefore all that was influenced by or was part of the tradition I heavily rejected at this time. Well, after that I think I began to know Mahler better, and when I was in Germany, and when I was in Baden-Baden, I remember we discussed it with Hans Rosbaud. And Rosbaud told me, "Listen to this symphony", and it was the 9th symphony recorded by himself, and I was really very much impressed then, so I began to have an opinion on Mahler that I could not have before because of lack of knowledge." - Pierre Boulez, 2009

I love the possibly bitonal snippet at 8:32. It is one of my favourite Reger moments, and, along with the Silhouette Op. 53 No. 6, perhaps the closest he gets to pianistic Impressionism.

This is a very great performance, probably the best of Rosbaud's Mahler. (He also recorded 1,4, 6, 7, 9, and Das Lied von der Erde.) The score you've posted is of the critical edition which wasn't available when this performance was recorded. Rosbaud uses the pre critical edition which is different in several places.

didn't know Reger had a late style
@Vincent_Xia
@Vincent_Xia 2 жыл бұрын
You subconsciously already know Reger's late style (somewhat), since his Telemann variations (Op. 134) were also written late in his life. His late period (1907 - 1916) largely dispenses with the dense and sometimes overbearing textures found in some pieces of his middle period (1900 - 1907), hence why the Telemann variations appear shockingly bare-bones compared to his Bach variations. Harmonically, the Telemann variations are also simplified; several of the variations contain some of Reger's most harmonically simple writing because the harmonic progression is generally preserved (this is sometimes IMO a flaw, as it can lead to some variations sounding repetitive). These pieces, however, retain Reger's harmonic complexity and innovation. Many instances of striking dissonances can be observed (such as at 1:22 or 8:32) and there is an introspective and sometimes quasi-Impressionistic quality about these pieces, which creates the image of a post-Romantic Brahms. Another wonderful late Reger set is the Träume am Kamin Op. 143, the last of his piano opuses. It epitomizes Reger's mature harmonic language, and leaves us wondering where he would have gone had he not died prematurely.

Although I love so many of Moszkowski’s works, this unfortunately doesn’t hit the spot for me. While I’m sure it was not Moszkowski’s intention, it seems like a rather shallow “homage” - a poor imitation of Schumann’s wonderful, whimsical music.

horrible voice leading. Busoni clearly has no knowledge of the existence of anchor notes. Edit: listening more to this, it is clear that the Form is also absolutely horrendous, feeling like an amateur's first attempt at composition. There is clearly no scope in the composer's eyes, he is just sticking a bunch of mismatched puzzles together in the form of musical ideas in a one incoherent whole.

I used to like to say as a music student, that Reger is "Brahms on crack," and that is a joke obviously, but there is some truth to it. I know of no better master of the fugue as handed down from Bach in the Late Romantic/early 20th Century time period, and though his harmony is pretty advanced without being atonal as much Late Romantic harmony was (even Brahms), he really is a bit of a throwback in his love of the fugal style. Won't hear that too much in these Sonatinas, but listen to his organ fugues...One of my favorite composer's quotes is by him, in response to a bad review: "Gentlemen, I am sitting in the smallest room of my house. Your review is before me; soon it will be behind me." He didn't care if you hated his music, though I'm sure he would rather people liked it. He just kept doing his thing anyway throughout his short life.

Busoni's Elegies are highly stylized with what seems theatrical and operatic characteristics; which I find very appealing, especially their bitonality and vertiginous atonality. Truly a charming listening experience for those who are partial to post-Romantic, burgeoning experimental and atonal piano music. I for one just love it!

Pianist John Ogden captures Busoni's virtuosity and eclecticism in this unusual symphonic piece. I find Ogden's performance absolutely stunning on all levels, from his perfect synchronicity with the London Symphony Orchestra, very ably directed by Jascha Horenstein, to the lyrical, chiaruscuro sonorities Ogden traduces here. All things considered, John Ogden renders an entirely scintillating, intellectual, even aristocratic performance here of very obscure , difficult repertoire.
