Of the 30 players who had been selected for the 1985 tour, only David Kirk and John Kirwan did not join the Cavaliers in 1986 - it was an All Back team in all but name. By the time of the 1987 Rugby World Cup, the All Blacks decided to drop many of the old guard from the Cavaliers tour, and played with a relatively inexperienced side, so comparisons with this Cavaliers team regarding who would have won the RWC87 are not really valid. The RWC squads in those days were only 25 strong. Cavaliers who won the RWC87: A.Whetton, McDowall, Pierce, G.Whetton, Anderson, Shelford, Deans, Fox, Taylor and Crowley. A selection of the 15 inexperienced players who made the RWC87 team and had nothing to do with the Cavaliers: Kirk, Kirwan, Fitzpatrick, Michael Jones, Zinzan Brooke, Frano Botica, Joe Stanley, John Gallagher. Still, the 1987 RWC was still 'empty' without the participation of this great Springbok team. Who would have won? Who knows. I would have loved to have seen e.g. Joe Stanley versus Danie Gerber though. The world of rugby missed out!!

If you talk about Naas Botha, just remember what happened in the 1987 CC final. Half time and Northern Transvaal was in serious trouble. Apparently Naas told them "just give me the ball". The rest is history.

What happened? Springboks no longer score tries, just kicks to win by 1 point. Most boring team in rugby History. And SA would have been smashed in the 87 WC. So much arrogance from the rainbow nation.

This answers question around who is the GOAT rugby team. It is the springboks from late 1977 to 1987. The right men at the wrong moment. Excluded from rwc 1987 in total obscurity.

There was a lot of controversy back in NZ on the All Blacks touring SA under the name of the Cavaliers in 1986 due to the official SA tour being cancelled the previous year. They were not an official NZ side sanctioned by the NZRU and those players received bans when they returned. The Bok team were better winning 3-1 in the tests but sorry what did it prove in the end?
@priehowell8825 Жыл бұрын
It proved rugby was the winner. The players from NZ wanted to test themselves to see if they were the best in the world.

@steveburt74038 ай бұрын
No Kirwan, Gallagher, Stanley, Kirk, Brooke, Jones, Fitzpatrick, Drake, Botica etc ... so proved nothing, just deluded SA into thinking they were the best against a shadow NZ B team. (At best) ... 87 ABs would have smoked them, 86/87 wallabies and french teams were alot better. A real shame SA weren't at the WC in 87 though.
@petes95248 ай бұрын
@@steveburt7403 At that time the Boks led the ABs in tests and series away wins. The ABs only won an away series against the Boks in 96. Your assertions are a good example of confirmation bias, certainly not based on fact, just mere unfounded speculation
@KatharineShaw-z8u8 ай бұрын
With the exception of Kirwan and Kirk the other players you mentioned were not yet ABs when the Cavaliers tour took place in early 1986 but most of them were key players in 87. Did the late great John Drake go on the Cavaliers tour? I can't remember@@steveburt7403

There is no way in hell that Springbok team would've lost to NZ in 1987. I guess it must've hurt twice as bad when we finally got admitted in 95. I wonder how we would've gone in 91? We had a pretty good side those years.
