Tries by Uli Schmidt, Naas Botha, Danie Gerber and Jaco Reinach during a match against the courageous New Zealand Cavaliers, a group of All Black players that rightfully did not believe that sport and politics should be mixed. The venue for this 3rd test of this 1986 rebel tour was Loftus Versveld in Pretoria.

“Naas is a genius - a match winner. I’ve often said it and I’ll say it again: I cannot believe that a team with Naas Botha in its ranks could ever lose a match. This is what Doc Craven said about Botha "He can win virtually on his own against any opposition. Naas has the presence of mind to know exactly what is happening, to sum up his opponents and instantly decide on the correct tactics. Give me Naas Botha any day and I’ll beat the world…”

naas botha, the best reader of the game ever, he knew beforehand what the opposition would be doing and placed himself in the right places all the time. his biggest weakness would be tackling but those days he didn't need to tackle much anyway. NZ should be greatful that SA weren't aloud to play the first world cup 1987. we would have one that one too.

Keep dreaming. This wasn't the All Blacks just some mercenaries at the end of their careers. The proper All Blacks stayed in NZ and beat the FrenchThere was nothing courageous about the Cavaliers going to South Africa and supporting a racist and facist regime. The real heroes were All Black captain David Kirk and All Black superstar John Kirwan who refused to travel. The All Blacks adifferent team to this in 87 would of easily taken care of that Bok team playing away from home without local refs and at at sea level. South Africa showed in 92 when they came back that they were well behind in their rugby.

@wernertukker5420 Жыл бұрын
@@FTMJarra Carter is great. Make no mistake. But he is no Naas. Maybe had a touch more flair than Naas, but that’s about it. Naas, is a match winner. Full stop. And by that I mean… he takes control of a match like no other player I’ve ever seen. Can take a game away from the opponent in no time. If he played in the modern game, he would’ve gotten to 1000 points before Carter did. And I mean in matches. Could kick, palace kick and drop with both feet, from pretty much anywhere just inside his own half. The way he could pick up balls, wet, heavy and snotty leather balls, in rainy weather, is another thing that sets him apart. He will forever be remembered for his kicking game, but he could send a back line away like no one else. His vision, understanding, the reading of the game, and just the sheer presence on the field, is what makes him greater than Carter. In the modern game, flyhalfs are a protected species… Naas was hunted more viciously than any other player, yet, time and time again, his teams would dominate and win matches. And that was mainly because of the ‘Naas’ factor. His only blight, is that he wasn’t known for his defence, but when it mattered, he never hid away. Probably the biggest sporting name in South African sporting history. Not just rugby. Naas is Baas brah… Phil Bennet next, then Carlos Spencer, then Larkham and then perhaps Carter. But I personally rate Wilkinson a better fly half than Carter.

Yes they were paid. We're talking about the New Zealand Cavaliers here. They were an unofficial NZ team that toured when the NZRFU banned games against apartheid SA. Each player got a stuffed brown envelope after each game and a 2 match ban on return to NZ. The New Zealand Cavaliers were similar to the rebel Argentine and World XV tours in the 1980's - paid for by the SARFU to satisfy the SA public's love of international rugby during the isolation years.

@001Dixie The All Blacks may be chokers at World Cups, and look that's fair enough, but it's wrong to see us as just chokers. Every game is a must win for the All Blacks, not just a tournament every 4 years. The ABs have a 75% overall win ratio, a winning record against every nation they've played, they've never lost to Ireland or Scotland, etc etc. You get the point. I was glad the Cavaliers toured South Africa, after the All Blacks were stopped the year before. Politics needs to stay the fuck out of sport .Sport is a form of human expression and brings countries together , uniting them . This Springbok backline was exceptional with the likes of World Class legends of the game, Botha, Gerber and Carl DePlussis. I predicted a Springbok series win as they were too big, strong and fast for the New Zealand backline. The forward battle went to New Zealand, but the attacking ability of the Springbok backs was sublime. The Springboks would have definitely won the 1987 World Cup. That's coming from a wise New Zealander.

Saw a comment by Naas Botha recently so thought I'd check him out on this vintage footage. Not bad, although certainly nothing like as good as I'd been led to suppose. I see that he made a decent fist of club rugby in the USA. His win ratio against other nations was surprisingly poor so I'm a bit puzzled by Craven's famous comment, but fair play to the man for making the most of his chances in this match. Entertaining enough, but you can see why Nelson Mandela said he and his fellow in-mates always cheered for the opposition when the books were playing.

Of the 30 players who had been selected for the 1985 tour, only David Kirk and John Kirwan did not join the Cavaliers in 1986 - it was an All Back team in all but name. By the time of the 1987 Rugby World Cup, the All Blacks decided to drop many of the old guard from the Cavaliers tour, and played with a relatively inexperienced side, so comparisons with this Cavaliers team regarding who would have won the RWC87 are not really valid. The RWC squads in those days were only 25 strong. Cavaliers who won the RWC87: A.Whetton, McDowall, Pierce, G.Whetton, Anderson, Shelford, Deans, Fox, Taylor and Crowley. A selection of the 15 inexperienced players who made the RWC87 team and had nothing to do with the Cavaliers: Kirk, Kirwan, Fitzpatrick, Michael Jones, Zinzan Brooke, Frano Botica, Joe Stanley, John Gallagher. Still, the 1987 RWC was still 'empty' without the participation of this great Springbok team. Who would have won? Who knows. I would have loved to have seen e.g. Joe Stanley versus Danie Gerber though. The world of rugby missed out!!

jesus the Cavaliers were worse than i thought. Played like they are hung over. No defensive line organized. Slow unfit and not up to international standards even for the day. Bloody provincial team would have done better. Christ no wonder this was not televised in nz.

@@floydkingi4364 bru you can try and sugar coat it all you like. The fact is the NZ selected an official All Black squad to tour South Africa before the Cavaliers tour. Of all the player selected for the AB’s squad, only 2 (Krik & Kirwan) decided not to tour with the Cavaliers. They were beaten by arguably one of the best Springbok sides ever. No shame in that.

@@mrRoetser Oh there is no doubt this is one of the best Springbok sides ever and were clearly No. 1in the World at the time. They were certainly good enough to win the 87 RWC, however at the RWC nothing is a given, poor refereeing, poor form on the day, the ooposition playing the game of their life on the day can suddenly change the narrative. So to say SA would definitely have won the World Cup is a bit presumptuous. It would have been great to see them play, imagine Jaco Rheinach v John Kirwan, Gerber v Stanley, the younger fitter, well coached ABs would definetely given the Boks a good go, it would jave been interesting. In your comment you said this same Cavaliers team won the following years World cup, this clearly isnt true, most of this team playing here didnt play in the 87 RWC and all I was doing was pointing that out. Of the 87 top NZ XV that won the RWC only 4 were in this game, Grant Fox, Craig Green, Gary Whetton and Warwick Taylor

Corageous NZ cavaliers? Nothing courageous about touring SA under apartheid. Courageous was John Taylor for refusing to tour in 74, having done so in 68.
@SupremeBros2012

Spot on, its only the sore thumbs in a crowd of "Group think" that can be called courageous. Courageous were also the millions of South Africans back then who trod along whilst being oppressed, but the apartheid apaologists who are now on the back foot would want you to believe that because things are not so great for them as it was back then, that back then was better, selfish gits

@RamKat24 Think about the way that rugby reacted when John Taylor refused to tour with the lions in 74, and tell me then that it took courage to go and play rugby on racist tours.

Like I suppose it took courage for Goering to take a defiant stance at Neuremberg. Possibly. But I prefer John Taylor's courage. His was courage on the side of right, not courage in supporting an evil racist regime. His was the courage of a decent man.

Apartheid SA vs the crumbling, corrupt destroyed nation today? I know where most blacks would choose. Their neighbour Ian Smith was absolutely right. I met a black Sudanese recently who openly admitted they needed the colonists back. There's honesty & integrity. Meanwhile, Peter Hain et al watch SA burn as they sit smugly in Britain...
