I am not new to fixing cars and trucks. However I got out of doing that in the 90’s and I am way behind the times. I have a 2011 Chevy Avalanche with only 89,000 on it. The starter is dragging and I am going to have to change it. I got a site where they took the front tire and wheel well cover off and twist and turned to get the starter off from the side instead of dropping it. I knew there must be a better way than to do all that. Glad I found your site. Saved me a “whole-lot-a” trouble. Thanks. BTY, that Avalanche you were working on sure had a lot of oil you had to work in. Thanks for the knowledge.

@BroVon-xb2rq25 күн бұрын
Thank-you, sir! Like how you didn't edit out your struggles, makes instruction more down to earth. I just did this job on '08 Merc Mariner. Couple notes: 1) To remove bottom cover more easily, which has a rubber gap seal attached, I unclipped the top of the plastic cover on the dash below the steering wheel -- did not have to unscrew anything or take it clear off, just loosen the top. 2) Unclipped transponder ring first so didn't have to unplug it. But found I did have to unplug the other two plugs along with the larger one for the ignition switch assembly (ISA) itself in order to get enough slack on the combined cable to pull out it's plastic retainer clip. 3) To loosen original break-away bolt, I gripped it with a small vise-grip -- could only turn a few degrees, but after three tiny turns it was loose enough to unscrew the rest of the way by hand -- no Dremel needed. 4) Tied a string around the steering wheel to the other parts above the ISA so wouldn't slide down -- there's a small yellow gear in there that I thought best not to disengage. Otherwise it went basically as you detailed. 5.5 mm for (6) screws; 12 mm for break-away bolt on new ISA (the new bolt was ~1/4" longer than old). Didn't disconnect negative battery terminal. Didn't remove air bag and steering wheel. Didn't have to rekey anything (used original tumbler and transponder ring). Wished I'd had a swivel offset for 1/4" drive for the right screw; used a very short 1/4" hex to 1/4" square adaptor with the socket and turned with a 1/4" wrench -- slower than a ratchet socket, but worked fine. God bless.
