I have always raised baby birds of all kinds and the formula I have found that works best having spoken to avian vets is dry cat food, and liquid calcium being the main two ingredients. Of course you soften the dry cat food in water, but never forget the liquid calcium. That is very important for all birds of all ages. Not saying what you are doing here is wrong. Just putting out what I did when I raised baby birds.

You know it's always possible to get sparrows to eat from your hand. It's a bit time consuming and largely depends on any other birds around the area. Here in England there is just too many pigeons and gulls, however, in Switzerland I managed to have an entire towns sparrow population following me around. Find a small group of them, feed them some bread at first, throwing it out for them. Bread isn't really good for them, so after a few days change to musli, but no rice!! Seeds are best. Always wear the same clothing or at least a jacket so they can identify you. It's so rewarding to have them as close friends. Something I think the whole world should know really, I really miss them.🥲

I absolutely love birds. I have a jay that I raised this Spring and let it go free about two months ago. But it comes back every day. It follows me while I am in the garden or if I go for a walk. I leave water and some food outside now because the days are so hot. He really loves cherries 🍒 😊.

Too bad you never taught him to be afraid of predators. I see too many videos where people raise birds, but don't teach them how to look for food or be afraid of predators. Some cat probably had him for lunch. You may have been wise and kept him as as pet.

Letting free a bird after so much human contact and free food, it will surely not know how to find food in nature. If you want to let a baby bird free, it needs to be taught how to look for food, which is a very hard task.

See this is exactly what I hate about life- the separations and endings that happen...and the pain of losing something or someone you're attached to..but whattya do? If you live like a recluse, monk or saint and never attach to anything or anyone, sure you won't feel the pain of loss, but then you're not really living; and if you do attach to ppl and things (and of course everyone has to when they're young since their survival depends on it) then you're setting yourself up for eventual heartache when those things or ppl leave, either through obligation, circumstances or even death...Don't know how to deal with it... "Welcome to the shi#show" I guess... 😐
