Nice looking model How do you keep the chassis straight so that the engine isn't out of line when you come to fit it?
@heathjohnson44863 ай бұрын
@@paullloyd6821 I get the frame all glued and while still wet and on its side I push it up to a small carpenters square until both frame rails touch it. Then I know it’s square.

I never searched AMT builds until now but remember this kit quite well from my youth (I think I remember these kits being a whopping $10 or $15 back then lol). I look at the moldings now and their poor quality reeeally sticks out compared to today's parts. You did a fine job cleaning up this old kit! There are probably a number of model railroad detail items that are now handy for detailing these old kits, just like the rivets you used. Even as a kid, I hated that seam... Little did I know, I would end up driving trucks after ten years of starvation-wages in radio stations and the first trucks I drove were cabovers in the early 90s (an '89 Freightliner being the first, long after White had parted ways). They're cool to see restored these days but my joints ache just at the thought of getting dressed on my back and crawling over the doghouse in these old flat-tops! lol Good job and thanks for sharing a very nice build!

Thanks for sharing your story. I am glad you liked. I have an international cabover in my pile of ‘to-do’s that I hope to complete soon. It is apparently completely retooled and goes together much better than some of the older kits.

Nice build!!!! I was in love with this model back in 1988, never built it though, I felt like it was too much for my age. brings back memories.....
@heathjohnson44866 ай бұрын
Thank you. It is a more challenging one for sure as it has a lot of parts.

Nice build. You're right, that color is period perfect. 👍 I'm working on the same kit but the dump box will be replaced by the old "big stick" wrecker body from the AMT Peterbilt. I hope it turns out as nice as yours!

Heath , you did an incredible job on this. My Dad used to drive a COE Freightliner and tis is awesome!. This is one I'd like to do! those rivets also come on some kind of sheet too so you don't have to apply 1 by 1. I just got back into building cars and trucks. I just posted my build of the Smokey and Bandit. It turned out pretty good for being my 5th truck and trailer. Cheers! Earl

That's good looking truck. But I can't help but notice how, those guys over at Round 2, seem to be on top of the game, and fixing those molds. They do good work over there too.
@heathjohnson44868 ай бұрын
Love the round two team as well. This has really been the only kit out of a dozen or so I have got from the round two brands that the quality was not very good. Usually I am quite satisfied, especially given the age of some of these kits.

It would be cool if Round 2 did re-tool that kit, join the cab together and supply the day cab too!! Cheers! Earl@@heathjohnson4486

I totally concur with your assessment on how these OLD AMT molds are. I really want to build this kit, being a former trucker and a son of a truck driver, And spending more time in a Freightliner or a White Freightliner than any other truck. I've experienced the same problems with the AMT Kenworth W925 model kit trying to make the Smokey and the Bandit tractor and trailer as well as the Trans Am. I got mostly a very sketchy rolling chassis and engine until it fell inside my closet in a box, so I gave up but I still had the trailer tandems complete and perfect. So I am going to build the Revell Kenworth W900 aerodyne tractor, but use the AMT W 925 cab sleeper and hood. I enjoy the big truck models more because like you said they take time, it's mostly what me and my dad built but we also built a lot of classic cars and a few helicopter model when I was young. I like the detailing in the big trucks models a lot, and it is why it takes so long for me to build a model because of the detail I like to add. I love your channel great builds!
@heathjohnson44869 ай бұрын
Hi Denny, Thanks for checking out my channel. You might want to check out the international transtar cabover. It was completely re-tooled about a year back. I have not opened mine yet, but I have seen many others report that it goes together super nice with the modern tooling.

Beautiful build. I built this model years ago (like 40 odd years ago!) and still have it. I was going to completely dismantle it as it is showing its age and parts are falling off of it. I was thinking about putting the dump body on something else, like the AMT old Western Star, that I also have. Then, make the Autocar into a heavy hauler, maybe.

Thanks a lot. It is an old kit. I was surprised that it went together pretty well for being so old. I have built a couple other old AMT trucks that did not build up as nice as this one.
