what a wonderful metaphor! especially applicable to bach, but also to any composer - there's artistic intent (whether the composer consciously thought about it or not) behind every note that we've got to make the most of!

You're not counting towards the downbeat---proactively, as dancers do. You're counting from the beat, reactively, as printed with XVIIIth c. typographical limitations and notation tradition. Resist the print. Dance: 1// and 2, and 3, and 1// and 2, and 3, and 1//. Nice virtuosity on the tempo, but why rush? it makes it sound like a panicked soprano. Or FOMO (fear of missing out). Would you sing it that fast? Maybe stately, or lullaby are better directions? No dancer or soldier walks that fast without looking silly. Leave the sprinting to the Olympics :-) “Tempo ordinario“. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada.
