I've heard this piece all my life, and it never captured me until now. Rachmaninoff's insight into the proper structure and cadence of this piece is just astounding. I've listened to it three times today already. What an artist.

LIGHT-YEARS GENIUS!!! It takes a genius to understand another genius… Perhaps the only person to have fully understood and uncovered what Chopin meant in this Sonata… the most definitive version of all.

Had a stage seat, a folding chair, just off the left hand of VH, with view of keyboard, at Chicago Orchestra Hall. Maybe 8 feet or so, away from VH as he ripped through his version of the Rachmaninov piano sonata 2. Unbelievable!

I can just hear the sound engineers with Rachmaninoff. They ask him if he could play he 4th a little faster. He replies ' Da!.. I got this ..hold my wodka.."

by FAR the best interpretation of this piece. if this level of degree were played at the chopin competition, they would've immediately gotten 1st.
@letsbrawl945

I think it's the opposite. Old school pianists like Cortot, Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, etc. would all get laughed at in chopin competitions. This is the problem with a lot of competitions nowadays.

13:03 never heard this part played with such ferocity, and I don't mean that as a bad thing at all. I really like the power he puts in the bass, with it being just before the delicate middle section. There are so many brilliant artistic choices, especially in the finale with it being so clear yet so turbulent that are not seen often today at all with the push for absolutely exactly what the composer intended on the score
