It can be a challenge for sure. The key is to sell the value of your services beyond what the perception may be ("just a drone pilot"). I like to add that I offer safety, flying legally so they don't get fined and that I carry insurance so if there is an accident, they are covered. It usually helps sell the idea of hirer rates.

@@altitudeuniversity I'm learning just from studying that there's a lot of little things that go into being a drone pilot. I'm taking my part 107 test on Tuesday! Most of the drone gigs I'm preparing for are simple photo and video capturing an event or a space. I would love to see a comprehensive video walking through a full job and the steps needed to prepare for something bigger. Things like contacting ATC for permission, or using radios to contact towers for weather are intimidating for a someone who isn't a full-time manned aircraft pilot. I would love to transition out of the smaller drones like my Mavic 2 or Air 3 that I just got into larger ones that hold camera rigs for my commercial shoots, but I don't know where to start. Any other videos that feature specific gear or prep items would be great. I loved seeing the landing pad you use, that's a great idea. Things like logbooks or how to use the radios would be awesome. For any flight scenario that propeller guards are advised or required, are there ways to add those on to DJI-type consumer drones? Or do you need something bigger or more of a custom built setup for that? Just a few ideas off the top of my head. I love to see anything involving practical application of all the stuff we're studying. Thanks again!

Am I missing something? I cannot possibly know which direction the remote PIC should look the "unmanned aircraft operations at 9 o'clock" because they only tell you where your drone is in relation to the manned air traffic not in relation to you, the remote PIC. I could be anywhere viewing my drone in flight, especially since the 2 miles distance is under the 3 miles required visibility.

A 6 inch screen is not large. I fly my Mavic 3 pro with a 10 inch tablet, and I hate small screens. I also think they're dangerous because you can't see thin wires. Also saying it has a 9 mile range is stupid, be cause if you fly 9 miles away you won't have enough battery to get back. The furthest I can go is 5 miles round trip, and even that is risky, specially over water.
@altitudeuniversity
@altitudeuniversity Ай бұрын
I actually found the screen to be good, even when flying around wires. A tablet is, of course, better, but I didn't mind the screen size at all. I understand where you are coming from on the 9 miles. We like to share the specs, but like most drones, they have specs that are based on perfect conditions, which, in the real world, you will likely not see. It's a great drone, though, and I think a lot of people would enjoy having it in their fleet. Thanks for the comments!

Just how often are people really flying drones near airports as it seems the entire test is focused on that aspect. There is no part of the study guides with any real drone flying knowledge other than some air density and wind aspects. The entire part 107 test should be more about actually flying drones not 90% unrelated airport charts and rules, it's like the people in charge of it were so lazy they just cut and paste air traffic testing into a test for something totally unrelated. Also there is such a large focus on visual line of site that studying sectional airspace charts is absurd for someone flying below 400 feet or within 400 feet of an obstacle. The NOTAM stuff also irrelevant for drone flying anywhere but at or nearby to an airport. Something tells me they just made this certification difficult so there would be less certified drone commercial pilots. Why not just make it an IQ test.
@altitudeuniversity
@altitudeuniversity Ай бұрын
I can understand your frustration. Depending on where you live, you may fly by airports all the time, but for some people, that might not be the case. It can seem like there is a lot of extra unnecessary information on the test but it at least builds a good common ground that all pilots can understand. You may find some of it less useful for your particular situation, but at least you only need to take the in-person test once.
