sorry, but music a bit inapt, maybe something a bit more elegiac wold be more fitting. A shame this wonderful historic building is being allowed to fall into disrepair, soulless council again ,it is an amazing construction and well worth preserving. But I bet it will not. Seen the preservation of some wonderful mills and such-like. Why not this?

I'm thinking of biking the top cut for a video. When I was a young lad, my grandad would take me walks up there and there was still water in the cut and a swing bridge operating. There was also a wooden hut for a canal worker, and me and my grandad shared a mug of tea with him. Not far from the top of Crow Hill. The hut got burnt down but the brick fireplace and chimney remained for some years - it would be interesting to see if the bricks are still there. Alan

@@Olleetheowl Cheers - I hope I can remember where the hut was - it would have been late 1950's when we walked the towpath, and I'm 74 now :) Further along, I remember when the Monks Path was clearly visible, not covered in grass and brambles like it is now.

Just watched this video along with your Nottingham canal one. Re Magpie, you have certainly done your homework on this! Metal mining has been my enduring interest since my teens. You may know that the Magpie sough has lock gates in it. If you do a search for my "Derbyshire lead mining" (photo stream) on KZbin you will see a picture of these. Also, re the canal, we visited the Wollaton flight in the 60s, at the end of Woodyard Lane, when they lay derelict and before all the housing took their place. Got photos of the scenes. A footpath now follows their course.

Just watched your last 2 videos of the Cromford Canal. The interesting mix of drone, 360 camera and the varied format of stills make these a bit different to the usual type of video and make it worthy of a special comment. Great stuff. Know the canal very well having walked it with my father in the 60s and with my late wife during "courting days"!

Hi. Thanks for a very interesting tour. The 4 concrete posts you commented on are the ones that held the crossing gates that was one of the access points to what was Coppice colliery, where I was an apprentice fitter from 1962 to 1965. The gates where still on at this time, complete with a GNR cast iron notice on a post at the side of the road. The station was still all intact, but a bit vandalised. The house at what was the end of the line is obviously a station house, though a fair way from the station. Thanks for a great film.

However for a change, I have some free time and I have to say, this is a very well narrated history video that I have enjoyed watching. I shall try to find time to watch the other videos in this series. I hope you are keeping well.

Enjoyed the video "Owl", just a couple of mistakes that I noticed. First you showed images of New Basford Station on Haydn Road on the GCR line instead of correct images for Basford North. Second you kept mentioning Badingdom (I think) whereas the real name is Babbington. Other than that most enjoyable.
@Olleetheowl9 ай бұрын
Hi Chris. Thanks for asking the time to watch, and to comment. In reverse order…. I’ve listened to the “Babbington” bit a couple of times, and to me it sounds correct ( this could be a short tongue and a strange accent thing) my Mrs who is an Ilkeston girl is always asking me what I said. Second. The station. …. You got me. Guilty as charged. I always try to be careful with my research but this time I was very obviously not diligent enough. Thanks for raising the point. I’ll put a note in the description. Lastly I’m glad that you are enjoying the video. Two and Three are up. And Four is in the pipeline. I hope that you will watch them. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks again … Tim (The Owl).😀

and bit more from the West Hallam history site... "In 1940 West Hallam Dispersal Depot was built by the military off Cat and Fiddle Lane, to relieve pressure on their Chilwell depot. It eventually comprised 112 Romney sheds with nearly a million square feet of storage space and closed in 1959. The site re-opened in the 1960's as Midland Storage, later operated by TDG Pinnacle, and now (2019) by XPO Logistics."

The land for West Hallam depot was acquired during WW2 as an offshoot to Chilwell ordnance depot. More details at the National Archives and various places online... discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C303089. It reopened in the 1960's as a storage depot and has been used by the likes of Boots for road freight operations. My dad used to work there for Wests Transport shunting the Boots lorries around.

Excellent Video, I had no idea that this was such a lovely and mainly rural walk, its now on my to do list. The Cromford canal and its Pinxton arm are classic examples of how transport rapidly evolved within a century. First came the pack horse, then the canals (canal mania). Then of course the railways spreading to almost every corner of the country. Each one slowly replaced the other. The 19th century was a fascinating time of change.
