Tim - Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the video, as I know the area well and used to work in Derby at St Mary's Wharf close to the route, I just thought that like your Nutbrook Canal video, it was a bit disjointed, with very quick changes - still photo to drone shot to still photo to video etc. A little distracting? But the subject matter was excellent, and I look forward to the next one, or possibly two as you say. As a canal book publisher, I try to ensure that all copyrighted content has the owner's written permission, so I wonder how you stand with using Starship's music, rather than copyright free music. But perhaps I'm being a pedant!

Hi Peter. Thanks for taking the time to comment on the video, and I’m glad that you enjoyed it. The choice of media is really because as an amateur with no official training, it just happened. It evolved out of my three hobbies coalescing. Some people like this, others, not so. Essentially I just take the dogs for a walk, and take some images, then do a bit of research and put it together. I hope at the time that it flows, but as someone with professional experience and knowledge in the area, I am sure that you can see where my “expertise “ is lacking. This particular one has been difficult as the vast majority of the canal has been obliterated, and there is literally nothing of the usual artefacts to show. The next section is even worse, with huge stretches of the route now being under the A52. Tar Mac is not very interesting … The copyright issue is an interesting one. I too value the copyright, and wouldn’t ride roughshod over it. But You Tube has an interesting (and useful) solution to this. When I first started doing this sort of thing (on another channel), I did use “royalty free” tracks. In those days the tracks were very limited, and the software was abysmal. Things have moved on since, and one of the ways that this has happened is (in my opinion) quite elegant. Most (by no means all) of the “older “ music is now owned by vast corporations. They have purchased the copyright from the original owners for their own commercial gain. There is an understanding with You Tube (and others) that their music can be used, but the user cannot monetise their videos. Instead, the corporation get to use the video for monetary gain, data gathering and selling advertising. Essentially , because I use their songs without their written permission. They get to use my video without mine. I can’t make any money from my efforts, and they can take my video for their gain. Both parties know this before entering into the “agreement”. I gain music, and they gain several video marketing departments in the form of those of us who take advantage of this. Very occasionally, I will pick a track which is owned by an entity which doesn’t want it used in this way. In that case they will either apply restrictions on the use of it (it won’t play in certain parts or the world, or whatever). Or they will tell me that I can’t use it. In these cases I would take it down, and replace the offending track with something less contentious. It is a solution which works for me. And appears to work for “them” also. A scenario where everyone appears to be content. I hope that this addresses your concerns,

@@Olleetheowl Hi Tim / The Owl. Thanks for your explanation of how you can use (some) copyrighted music in your videos, which I now understand. In return, the music licensor (KZbin) has the right to insert adverts into your video. I wondered how it was done. And I'm looking forward to the next episode of the Derby Canal, notwithstanding the potentially unmissable and exciting A52 stage! Peter

@@petersilvester1315 hi Peter. Thank you for your very kind words. I will endeavour to make it the most interesting 3/4 hour of concrete and tar Mac that you have ever seen 😂🤣

music terrible - it's always online somewhere , please find something more pastoral to match the natural scenery. Good apart from that. Used to be a regular cycle route of mine from Ilkeston to Derby via Draycott to long Eaton and back. Pretty flat- so not much of a strain.

Hi Dave. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I’m glad that (in the main), you enjoyed it. Music is of course a very individual choice. And while I will admit that it is “all encompassing “. I did feel that the “built this city” was appropriate to how the canals (and later the railways) influenced the development of Derby as a city. I am about a third of the way through the route. Having got as far as Raynesway (The hard work starts about now). Just hoping that you can find more to enjoy in the next (Possibly two) part(s). Any hints/tips bits of info, would be appreciated. Again, thanks for taking the time out to comment. Best wishes. Tim .

@@OlleetheowlNow you explain , I understand the reasoning, just one of my least favourites that's all: just cannot get along with his voice, and maybe something pastoral is not really applicable to the ever-changing landscape which has been evolving right from the roman roads to the industrial revolution,- love your dogs by the way! look forward to next vid.
