It’s seem like a weird duplication of current option of current west gate and city link…. If roads needs to be built, it’s should be used to connected previous freeways to other freeways with no other freeway options to get between or even better public transit. For example even building the M3 to city link route should be prioritized and then build this later on, so it’s doesn’t feel like a duplicate thingy…

Best project that's ever been floated in this state since marvellous Melbourne, anyone who's ever been to Paris or London or any functional big metropolis knows how separating train lines need to be linked like a spiders web rather than having to travel to the CBD to get anywhere else . When our CBD was the hub of people's employment this was relevant, this system worked, more often now people's employment is in the suburbs. These other large cities don't have a CBD, they have thriving communities that form around transport hubs. All these naysayers are worrying about themselves now, it's selfish , not worrying what their kids and grandkids will benefit from in their city when we are long gone. About time we had a cross generational project rather than governments just doing what they can in their own terms for their own short term gain. My only quarm, of course they start in the east so the haves can benefit first- and if it gets shut down early , the poor old west will miss out, again.
@mjcats20112 күн бұрын
London, Paris do have CBD's. What are you talking about. If you want to be personal because many like my thinks that the SRL is a complete waste of money, then fine. But the SRL and the NE link is responsible for more pressing projects being canned or delayed.. And what about the atrocious bus network?
@bigadz0rКүн бұрын
@mjcats2011 ok the 'city' in London over near canary wharf is hardly a central place where people go to congregate, do their shopping, eat, ect. It's a business district for 9-5 mon -fri then dead the the world other times (which Melbourne CBD has become post COVID) Most action is had in Oxford St or Piccadilly or Clapham or Angel or Hammersmith ,the king's road or wherever your people are. If you are in Hyde Park and you want to get to Paddington it would kind of suck having to go to canary wharf then back out again, no? Like a river through a desert that brings green, the near train loop through these outer burbs will bring development, higher density housing, jobs, communities rather than just lines going out to urban wastelands like they do now. Surely it's worth the pain for us to realise the vision for the future. How it's paid for and who gets the contract is all politics , that's the dirty stuff, it dosent make the actual idea or concept any better or worse.
@mjcats2011Күн бұрын
@bigadz0r What absolute word salad. If you want to go from Hyde Park to Paddington, you could catch a frequent big red thing called A BUS. Hyde Park is a big place. What a strange example. All those areas served by the SRL already have decent rail services. Why would a loop make any difference? The big build is a disaster. For all the talk of this Government being Public Transport friendly the big build is overwhelmingly about roads. Our bus network is rubbish and our train network is average. This pork barrelling project should be canned. Canary Wharf is only 5km from the City of London.
@bigadz0rКүн бұрын
@mjcats2011 well, I guess until we reach a population of 10 million like London , we cant justify a network of big red busses that come every 3 minutes (or none for 15 then 3 at once ...) But by the time we are that big it'll be too late, we will have adopted the US method of cars , traffic jams and gridlock. Didn't have to be so literal on Hyde Park or Paddington! Just an example out of a hat, like saying I'm at Camberwell market and need to get to The Austin in Heidelberg, it's maybe 8km but without a car you need to travel all the way to Flinders Street then back out on the Hurstbridge line. Or go a couple of stops back to box hill, 2 stops on the new line. Perfect. Anyway debate generally always devolves down political lines, I'm unaffiliated, don't really have a dog in that fight. I just think it's a project worth pursuing. After travelling to over 60 countries you get to know which cities function and which dont and it's almost always dur to the public transport system...ours has barely changed since the gold rush money from marvellous Melbourne
@mjcats2011Күн бұрын
@bigadz0r No one is asking for a bus every 3 mins. Every 10 to 15 for all routes would suffice. So, by your logic, we cant justify a usuable bus network, but we can justify a $40 billion rail loop?

It will be if it ever gets finished. What spins me out is that this is 90km of double track and 16 stations for a minimum cost of $125bn and there is just one line. Sydney Metro will have 113km of double track and 46 stations across four lines by the time Phase 1 is finished in 2032, all for $64bn. One line is not a rail network. Several lines could be called a rail network. The SRL is a union-inspired rort that will slug taxpayers for generations to come, given that the VIC Government has no money and will need to borrow the proceeds. Chairman Dan was a bloody idiot for allowing this project to go ahead but then again, few people have ever said he was perfect, or even competent.

What do you mean the "most taxed" state? Australia doesn't have state-based income taxes like the US. The thing with metronet is that there is a lot of history of stupidity by previous governments that has caused this. Firstly Armadale road originally was a train line down to Fremantle via spearwood and bibra Lake, but some government in 1970 ( I think) decided to pull it up Although it was mostly a freight line, they used to put passenger carriages on the end this could have become a full passenger route connecting the Armadale to the Mandurah at Cockburn and carrying onto Fremantle Secondly, the kenwick to Cockburn line was 90% completed before 2001 when the Barnett government decided to scrap the project and create the current perth to Mandurah line we have now If they had completed the original plans, first we wouldn't have to make so big changes to Armadale/ Thornlie line now Thirdly is this modernisation of the complete metropolitan rail system to early and disposing of all our diesel rail cars without considering using them past were the electrification section finish say a diesel service from armadale to Byford or a diesel service from Fremantle to south Beach ( a lot of station from when the America's cup was held in Perth only recently got demolished recently before that they stood unused) What I'm getting at is a lot of things could have been kept but governments seem to have this attitude of i don't use to or i don't like it so the rest of us suffer and now we are paying for ot

i still understand asfter all that fluff, how this tunnel takes the pressure of the westgate bridge. all it does is get trucks going to the port off the suburbs. but who ever needs to go east is still going to bridge, and into our high flowing, superfast burnley tunnel. even if they are going east, because this 10 BILLION DOLLAR tunnel is connected to the Tullamarine freeway, ,and doest go east . The Tullamarine freeway is already connected to the wastage, and hardly anyone uses that connection. The end of the new tunnel just terminates at outer cbd. which will be great spot for window cleaners, they will have more time, maybe to even wash the cars, No one going from the west to the CBD, Stkilda and and thru to south, and south east can use tis tunnel The 10 lane Easter freeway, few KM away from this Termination, just like magic still not being connected to anything. same distance as this tunnel ;) Eastern freeway ends, your suddenly stuck in traffic in the inner suburbs, because? who the fark knows, and if you want to get to the western or Tullamarine freeway, the traffic that came out of a 10 lane freeway that needs to go NW ends up in a 1 lane rd thru the Zoo. now there is plenty of space to make the road wider, but they cant so that, because that restriction is what controls the traffic goig towards eastern freeway from being jammed more than what it is.
