I just learned about that mansion that was behind the mall today. I’ve lived in Iredell county since 1990, virtually my whole life, and we went to the mall so much when I was little. I got my first dog from the pet store there, but I never knew about the mansion behind the mall. I saw the driveway today to access the property but I didn’t bother going on the property since hearing it was gone. I bet there was so much history in that house… kinda symbolic of this side of town. I now live on the east side of town and I wish that something would change in this area. It’s been 7 years since I moved to this side of town and it just seems to be getting worse and worse with time. Hopefully that’ll change soon!

Kaitlyn, so sorry you didn't get to see that house. It had to have been a real beauty in its day. I really hate seeing things close in Statesville but that part of town really needs some kind of revitalization for sure. It has been declining for way to long. Hopefully with all the new improvements over there, someone will scoop it up and do something fabulous! Thanks for commenting.

Hey just wanted to say, I am 22 and I have lived in statesville my whole life, I do think, if they do it right, all of that land can be used in a very creative and positive way but I also would think it would be cool to see it completely renovated and expanded, being 22 I also think retail isn’t dead! it’s just so sad to look at east broad street and see what it looks like now compared to my childhood, and I also wish they would include Newtowne Plaza in the land that is being sold that currently holds the mall, because the Newtowne Plaza still looks horrible and even worse than the Kmart parking lot lol! I hope to see some type of improvement soon before I inevitably move away and leave this town in the coming years. This is a great video with great insight on my favorite little town!!

I completely agree Graham! I really do hope they find a great buyer that will put something there that benefits everyone. I for one loved the mall and still like to shop at them. I hate to see that they are going away. Repurpose them, put in a theater, restaurants, arcade, fun things for kids of all ages etc. I think the Newtowne Plaza owners would also be open to talks if they right buyer comes along for the mall. They are related and would sell to the right buyer. Fingers crossed for good things to come! Thanks for commenting.

Oh one last thing about the bbq. Growing up in Detroit and Michigan yeah we cooked the sauce on our meet so the meet came pre sauced. When I moved to Texas for 2 years and they handed me naked meet and sauce bottles I was like umm noooo I need my sauce cooked on as it enhances the flavor. But I’ve soon learned that many states do bbq this way including Ohio.

Just took my first trip to North Carolina last month. Ok ok I had been to North Carolina before many times but only just across the Tennessee boarder to go to Cherokee. So my main reason for visiting was to see the land of oz in beach mountain nc. But I ended up seeing Boone, statesville and much of the Charlotte metro. I found NC to be very much like my home state of Ohio. Charlotte reminded me of my home city of Cincinnati with its looping expressway and being on the boarder of another state and having roughly the same metro population. Even the state populations are similar. I even noticed how both states have similar metros. Ohio has 3 major metros. The Cleveland-canton-Akron metro, Columbus metro and the Cincinnati-Dayton metro. Very similar to nc. Raleigh-Durham, Winston-Salem and charlotte. Both states even boarder a large body of water. Ohio being Lake Erie to the north and nc having the ocean to the east. Even both states touch the Appalachian mountain range although I feel nc is a bit less flat than Ohio. Thanks for the video after visiting and falling in love with nc it made me realize that my home state of Ohio really isn’t that much different. I will be back for oz next year and I can’t wait as nc is a beautiful state.

Thanks for the video. In building a new home in this community what type of water, and sewer hookup is used? Also is the electric line at the street?
@liveinstatesville
@liveinstatesville 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Joseph. Thanks for watching! You would be required to install your own well and septic system for your new home. Iredell County will come out to perk the soils again based on where you would place your home. Be sure to allow enough time to complete that process if you are considering buying a lot. Duke Energy will hook up a temporary service during construction and then will connect the house upon completion. All electric is underground in this community. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Feel free to call me directly at 704-450-0588. Have a great day!

The South isn't a direction, it's a distinct culture, a distinct people. We invented BBQ, So we're doing it right. The rest may be valiant efforts, but still imposters. What you call "barbecue" in New England is, well, like the rest of yankeedom, heathenry :- D. We aren't really particular about what kind of frankfurter you use on hot dogs down here. I'd say we by and large prefer a traditional Southern red, but we enjoy Ballpark, Nathan's, smoked brats, all sorts, BUT, it's better come just how we like it, all the way. That's chili, slaw, onions, and mustard. That's all that really matters. As far as sweet tea goes, restaurants are a bit too sweet for most of us. We like our homemade sweet tea, and it'd BEST be Luzianne brand, but the average is about a cup of sugar per gallon of sweet tea. Some folks add a bit more than this. Me, personally, I go about 2/3 of a cup of sugar per gallon and add a bit of fresh lemon juice. As far as Pepsi goes, don't listen to the hype, that's all a bunch of out of staters and special interests in tourism departments and publications. The beverage company severed it's ties to it's home, it's just another soda to must of us. Cheerwine is OUR soda. The red clay is only in the Piedmont. Not in the coastal plains, and the mountains are much more rocky much the creek and rover bottoms tend to be dark and fertile, as does the bottom land in the piedmont. You get red clay in the piedmont where you get drainage. Mulch that red clay a bit and turn it well for a couple of planting seasons and it becomes light and fluffy. Even without it, things grow just fine in the red clay. That red clay grows the best sweet potatoes in the world. It also makes for good dirt racing. We true Carolinians are a people of old traditions and customs, including Christianity. We take it seriously and we take it to heart. While most churches in the State are Baptist, you'll also notice differences within particular regions. In the eastern part of the state you'll see more Episcopal churches. There are plenty of Southern Baptist churches to be found, but you'll see more Free Will Baptist churches as well. In the communities of the piedmont you'll see more Presbyterian churches in the areas settled by Ulster Scots. The Associate Reformed Presbyterian church, for example, is quite common in the Charlotte area, and has it's roots in the English civil war and the days of Oliver Cromwell. In the Catawba river valley, which was heavily settled by Palatine Germans, Lutheran and German Reformed churches are almost as numerous as Southern Baptist churches. I'm a descendent of many of North Carolina's first and leading families. Two of my great grandfathers were signers of the Halifax resolves and drafters of the original state constitution, another was a delegate to the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, others were state senators, members of the house of representatives, Justice's of the peace, military officers, and community leaders. North Carolina, as a heritage, a culture, was almost a religion handed down. There are very few of the old traditional Carolinians left. Far too many simply don't know their heritage. If this is your home, love it as it is, and as it was. Learn as much as possible. Over 40% of North Carolina residents were born out of state, with more moving in every year, and the rising costs of housing, and only real economic growth happening int he bubbles of the metro areas, North Carolina as a people, a culture, is dying. Very soon there will be no one left with roots, with ties to place and home, history and culture.

Does anyone know what happened to the old theater that used to be beside JRs? I know it closed but Idk why it closed down. I remember there used to be two theaters at the time until the one across from i40 was torn down because of the construction going on the interstates.
@liveinstatesville
@liveinstatesville 3 жыл бұрын
Amy, that theater has been closed for a long time (since 2000), long before the new one opened up by the Outback which was torn down last year. The Newtowne Theater was just a one screen for a while then they added a second screen but it was still too small and old to compete with the larger cinemas opening in Mooresville and Hickory. That shopping plaza had been declining for a while and then when JR's closed, the area went downhill for sure. Signs of change I guess.

Thanks for taking the time to comment! That may have played a small part in some of the changes there but there were certainly many other factors that contributed to the decline of the mall. We cannot always blame the city as this is a private business and they make most of the decisions as to what happens with the mall which they are still doing today.
