Almost 60 years since I had my first house, and yes it's exciting: and you've made a beautiful job of it :) (And it beats the pants off paying rent?)

Kinda similar to my house!! I bought one about an hour away from Nagoya, like $35k all in. My neighbors are these amazing dorks and I love them, it's a great spot. Also don't paint your ceilings!!!! The natural wood is beautiful, it's one of the things I really like about mine!!!!

Great Vid' :) A couple of thoughts: the ladder to the upper level in the shed is built for Japanese people who are lighter than Caucasians, it looks dangerous? and the second would be buy a role of bubblewrap to put over the single glazed windows? Being warm is sometimes more important than the view, it would be quite impossible to heat that place in winter?. I haven't seen your later videos yet, beyond that have fun. John, Perth, Australia. (Transposed to the northern hemisphere, about the same latitude as Tijuana or Marrakesh = zero snow here) Best wishes :)

Matt Guy do you not know the difference of a minivan and a car her let me tell you becouse you defiantly do not know for sure for you call this minivan in this video a car which it is not at car now if you had said vehicle and not say car then thats a completely different then for a minivan and a car are both a vehicle. but you did not you said a car and a car does not have as much room as a minivan at all to carry cargo in or to build in side of a car like you can in a minivan. sp stop all ready calling a minivan a car for its not a cat at all. oh ya you do not need to believe in anything i have said just look it up for your salf the difference of a minivan and a car you will see its not a car by any means.

Ah, you worked for Google in the SF Bay area and showered and ate on campus (or it sounds like that's what you did before we had to go on lock-down). I'm typing this from Berkeley right now. If you got stuck in the US during the first year of CoVid, I'm really sorry about that. It was exceptionally difficult to live here during that time, with all the gyms, businesses, and public swimming pools closed. That said, if you have to live anywhere in the world in a van, we have the climate here to do it comfortably and rarely do you get a mosquito bite. If anyone judges you for wearing crocs, they need to do some self-reflection on their own self-worth. They don't fit my narrow feet, but if they did, I'd have a pair. : ) Thanks for the run down on this van! Hope the mosquitos weren't too ruthless. Consider giving us a proper introduction to your traveling companion. She just showed up on your channel one day? lol

For sure don’t paint. The wood is healthy. And beautiful ! Just clean. Get new personal mats for yourself. NEW Blankets. Down bed and pillows. If anything needs changing it’s the kitchen. Keep the pans etc. Clean. Keep the doors till spring and you will know what new beginnings you should. If you do have to paint go white and non toxic.

That is cheaper than my car!! You are so very lucky; I'd give anything to live in Japan in a beautiful home like that- it's gorgeous. Would you please make a ost about how you accomplished this? I see homes in the USA for 50k or more and they are complet dumps with the walls and ceilings falling apart.

I think one major caveat about these Akiya (I assume this was an Akiya) is that the reason they are so cheap is that elderly people passed away in these homes, and most Japanese people are superstitious about that kind of thing. That's why there's no Japanese buyers and the government seizes it to try and prevent abandoned buildings from rotting. But if you are superstitious about that type of thing and considering buying an Akiya, be aware that the reason no one buys these houses is because elderly people passed away and the family abandoned it.

Yes, the only place I can think of with much worse earthquakes than where I live (California US) is Japan. Japan's earthquakes make California's earthquakes look silly. Stay safe, and please secure your larger items to your walls so they don't fall over on you. If you've never had a large armoire or cabinet fall over during an earthquake, it's just a matter of time before it does.

Honestly, It's inexcusable that your real estate agent did NOT tell you about the money available to people moving to Miyoko. smh I don't mean to be negative, but that's something every real estate professional should know because it's a selling point to motivate people to purchase.

Oh my. It's sounds like from the $6K house you now have a $12K house, just due to the plumbing needs, flooring, & pest control. You could make a video just on the running total of what things cost you. I hope these are some kind of write off business wise since you're making videos for your channel.

If I were a termite that needed to survive in deep snow country, I'd build my next UNDER the house so the snow wouldn't crush it. Just my survival perspective. I hope the pest mitigation wasn't too costly.

omg That mold would be a total deal killer for me. I have serious mold allergies. That changes absolutely everything (for me). That said, if mold doesn't affect your immune system, you got a good deal. I'm beginning to see why the Japanese tear their houses down & rebuild. The mold proliferation is a total game changer. The environmental expert who advised me on mold removal told me bleach does not work. You must use borax to actually kill the mold, and even once the mold spores are dead, they are still in the residence and will still cause allergic reactions in people, which is why they have professional mitigation. It's amazing that you have all this knowledge from your years of helping your father's construction/painting business. Super helpful for him to come and help out, as well. Honestly, I had no idea you had moisture leaking in from your room (massive condensation during winter, perhaps?). I sincerely hope you can get that addressed. An electric dehumidifier will be a monthly expense, but based on what I've seen in this video, it's an expense you cannot afford NOT to incur. You don't want the mold that is already there to keep growing and proliferating.

The Japanese are very polite, so it makes perfect sense to me that, culturally, the tradespeople do not give their opinions. What would be surprising (culturally) is if they did give their opinions. Economically, Japan has been in a economic slump for 30 years so people don't have money to buy a lot of home improvement things, so 5 shades of paint may be all the business own can keep on hand in a small town. The AU & US economies have been booming in the last 15 years, so of course we will have more options because we have more disposable income.

This is your house to do with what you like. That said, here are some of my fave features in your home... The rack for snowboards (I'm partial as a snowboarder since 1997) The cedar door that has the wood lock on the inside. The craftsmanship on that door is beautiful and elegantly simple. That carmel leather bench seating in the kitchen/dining area. Gorgeous in it's elegant simplicity. The way you updated the bathroom. Sleek, simple, functional, more modern. The cedar & stone touches were the icing on the cake. Love the clean but cozy furnishings of the guest rooms. I do hope none of your guest accidentally kick the metal bed frames around the bases of the bed as that is so unbelievably painful (especially if they are there to ski/snowboard). The sitting room for each guest bedroom is very thoughtful & guests will appreciate a private lounge space. Love that you chose NOT to pain the gorgeous wood ceilings & left the original doors. The white paint on the walls certainly brightened up the place tremendously & gives a clean aesthetic. The lacquer you added was subtle and it looks natural and beautiful. Did you do all these renovations yourself???
