It was originally proposed as a work project during the Great Depression to run from Maine to North Carolina. But, it was only constructed from Cherokee NC to Shenandoah National Park. The northern terminus of Shenandoah NP just happens to be due west of Washington DC. Politicians from DC could be in the mountains in an hour to cool off during the summer heat. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a not so hidden gem in the US. It's there for everyone to see and use, but relatively few ever do. I love to drive up there every Fall.
@funonwheels19035 ай бұрын
That is some really great information! I plan to return and ride the entire thing. It's too bad it never made it all the way to Maine.

@@funonwheels1903 The reason it ends in NC is that the chairman of the Ways and Means Committee was from NC when funding was approved. I attended Sturgis for a lot of years. My last one was 2021. Don't think I will ever do it again. It's gotten too expensive. The corporations have taken over. Also, too many people bring their families with little kids now. It should remain an adult playground. You want to do a family trip, go somewhere else.

My last year was 2022. Everything has gotten out of hand price wise. 😢

I have to say, compared to other motorcycle events I see very few families here. Other than the odd ball family vacation visiting Mt Rushmore. And I still find ways to do it on the cheaper side. Being a younger cross country rider it's not much of an option.
@funonwheels19035 ай бұрын
I am going to be posting a cost analysis video for my entire Sturgis rally run. The exact figures will be given to channel members but I will also make a ball park video for subscribers as well. So far I'm at 9 days on the road and considering that I have spent very little money. Don't get me wrong this place will make you take out a second mortgage but it DOESN'T HAVE TO!

Stayed at Lamphere Ranch last year (2023). Horrible experience. The bathrooms were disgusting. There was poo on the toilet seats constantly and it felt like they never got cleaned. The showers never had hot water. And where I parked my toy hauler.. it was close to the border for Glencoe so it was constant noise all night. Lastly, they screwed up during check-in and charged me and my wife an extra night beyond what we booked. When I caught it and asked them to remove it.. they said they couldn't because there's a no-refund policy. That really pissed me off...

If you are new and want to get the full right-in-Sturgis experience, there are people all over town (at residential homes) who rent out tent space in their yards. Showers and laundry are often included. Prices I saw last year were $25-$30/night per person. There was still vacancy as of the peak of the rally last year. Most of them are within walking distance of the downtown core.
