I was a slow hiker. I made it to Etna, California in 6 months on the trail. It was amazing. Regardless of the number of miles I did, I spent just as many days hiking, and sleeping in my tent, and resupplying, etc as a thru hiker who went the whole way. I went back the next year and hiked Etna to Canada. 👍🏻👍🏻 You got this!!!

still enjoying your videos! you will probably have already heard this by now, but in regards to your gross tasting water. there is a fix for it. When I was hiking the trail, there was enough water sources on trail that had weird and gross tastes to the water that I ended up always carrying some sort of powdered drink mix with me. Like Crystal Light or the equivalent of that, they come in the super handy little individual packets now! throw some of the drink mix into your water along with your electrolite stuff and it really really helps with covering up any nasty taste that the water may have. Thank you for sharing your hiking experience with us, you seem to have a good head on your shoulders and good wit and humor. You may not be able to complete the trail this year, but I believe that you can still complete a good bit of it and you will become the best version of you by the end of your hike this year. keep going! even if its a bit slow... LOL.

I remember you said your slow pace is because you're still recovering from a major injury. If you don't mind my asking, do you walk at a slower pace than usual, or is it more like a normal pace but you need lots of breaks and shorter days?

I’ve always been a trail turtle, but I’m the most out of shape I’ve ever been from the double stress fracture last year in my foot. I don’t have the ability to do long miles like I used to but that’s ok, it makes me slow down and appreciate the moment. Hopefully I can get more in shape as I go.

You need to wash using soap. SOAP DESTROYS THE VIRUS when the water-shunning tails of the soap molecules wedge themselves into the lipid membrane and pry it apart.

So glad to see another video pop up. There are many PCT I you tigers out there but you are in my top three!! Love your upbeat attitude and determination! I've seen other hikers go under that same sketchy underpass, so you can't all be wrong! Lol. As long as you're going the right direction, you're fine. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other! Happy hiking!

You'll need to chemically treat or boil water in addition to filtering. Alternatively, you get an expensive water purifier like the MSR guardian and ditch the sawyer.

I wouldn't think twice about skipping the noro affected areas. Had a friend catch it at the end of burning man a few years back. Had to talk with him on the phone as he drove himself to the hospital. It was brutal. Ended up having to get an iv. Between and the washed out trail...yeah skipping is the right thing to do.

Ocotillos aren't a cactus. They are in their own small family and are more closely related to Manzanitas, Rhododendrons, kiwifruit, and blueberries than cacti.

Just to confuse you further, but carbon fiber poles are also stronger than the aluminum ones. And you want strong poles when you’re going through the snow. I apologize for saying this! 🤣
@orion77415 күн бұрын
except that carbon fiber poles break much easier than aluminum ones do. aluminum poles have a ton of flex to them and when you get them wedged into rocks and stuff they will bend quite abit before breaking, whereas carbon fiber poles have hardly any bend to them and when you get them wedged into rocks and stuff they are way more likely to just snap instead of bending. aluminum poles are the way to go for thru hiking.
@SkepticalRaptor5 күн бұрын
@@orion7741 I think you flunked materials science courses in college. I didn't. Carbon fiber has a much higher tensile strength so in your example, aluminum would fail much quicker than aluminum. Plus carbon fiber is lighter. Moreover, to get the same strength as carbon fiber, more aluminum is necessary to make up for it's low tensile strength, thus it weighs a lot more. But even with that added aluminum, its failure point is similar to or even less than carbon fiber at the cost of more weight. Aluminum makes no sense at all in this application.

I am also a slow hiker and tend to carry too much as well. Perhaps I missed it, but how much water do carry and what did you eliminate to bring your pack weight down to 33 lbs?
@hikercattrails7 күн бұрын
Hello fellow trail turtle! I sent home my umbrella, phone stand and other little things I wasn’t using after the first week. Learned how much food I needed per day since it’s heavy and I was over packing it (I’m still working on that!) Being slower I carry 3-4 liters in the desert depending on how far away the next water source is. I was 33lbs with 6 days of food and 4 liters of water at the start, now I’m closer to 25-30lbs.
@jtellier07 күн бұрын
Wow and thank you for your response. When I am out hiking in desert or even chappal country like similar to where you hiked in, I tend to carry 4 to 6 liters especially when temperatures soar above 85°. Take care of your feet. You're going a decent pace and will get better and faster as it goes.

I'm not sure if you already have one ,but a small (around 2")cork ball really helps the feet and other muscles. Keep it handy and roll feet on it when taking a break.✌🏼
@surlyben8 күн бұрын
+1 on the cork ball. Rolling my my feet out every break took my foot pain from trail-ending to manageable. And I didn't need it after a few hundred miles. Search for wine stopper cork balls if you want to avoid the upcharge on thruhiker branded ones.

That fuzzy red "ant" is known as a cowkiller or velvet ant. It isn't an ant, but it is a type of flightless wasp with a painful venomous bite (much like a bee sting, supposedly just more painful). Just don't bug them, and you should be fine.
@PJ81810 күн бұрын
Usually, you see it from darker clouds; but that does look like virga, rain from clouds that evaporates before it touches the ground.

Doing great, the plan makes sense. It's the journey not the destination. I've seen hikers blog that started very slow and later could do a lot over longer days. I get what you say about metrics I guess everyone is like that. Your not getting shin splints from what I'm hearing and other things like knee pain so as long as the feet are good that's great. If the feet are bad it can cause a chain reaction. The lack of shade out there must be hard, it'll change but the plus is the open sky's and views.
