Graf played two awful games serving at 4-3 and 5-4 in the first set. The 1993 final was a much higher quality with both players at the peak of their concentration and barely making an unforced error.

lol forgot about Lendl wearing that weird hat. Kept the sun off though. Or maybe he was using it as blinders from the crowds that hated him heheh.

If you use Andre Agassi method you can actually tell where Boris is going to serve.

Lendl, Edberg, Becker all stayed in or at the top of tennis till the mid 1990s, I started watching tennis back in 1989 and if it wasn't for KZbin I would never have seen Mats hit a ball that's how much he fell away after his amazing 1988 when he won 3 of the 4 Slams. The power game which was taking over, a loss of motivation, his fathers death and a general case of being burnt out all contributed to Mats falling away dramatically at the end of the 1980s, still he was an amazing player highly athletic, seemingly tireless with the greatest strategic tennis mind the game has ever seen.

He was cool though. First real match I watched was his victory over Carl-Uwe steeb in the Davis Cup finals of 1989. I hade seen him earlier as in Davis Cup in 1984, but at that time I was so young I hardly understood what I was watching. Me in 1984, this is tennis or what?

Mats Wilander the second best tennis player from Sweden ever after Björn Borg , won in 1988 5 of the 6 biggest tournaments. Australian Open on Hard Court, French Open, US Open , Key Biscayne and Cincinnati. Something even Björn Borg was not even close to do. Wilander retired about 2 months after the US Open final in 1988. He som another tournament after US Open but after that that was it. As a 24 year old he had won 7 Grand Slams ( the first one at age 17 ) and 32 Grand Prix tournaments. He retired at age 24 from tennis with that incredible record. He played a tournament maybe once a year after that but that was not serious. He was invited and if it Suited him he Played it but untrained. He officially Said he retired st age 24 and 3 months. Though he was No 1 in the world a long tine after he retired because of his impressive 1988 year. He spent 8 months as No 1 in the world. His motivation was to become No 1 in the world. When that was Done his motivation was not there and he retired.

Their H2 does not give clear picture of their rivalry.. From 1988 - 90 Wimbledon 91 Australian open, 92and 95 ATP Master tournament where most of the time Becker was winner and if not winner he was finalist Agassi had skipped these tournaments and of course lets not forget that tanked match to Michael Chang at the 96 Australian open. Many Becker fans give excuse that in the 90's Becker's game declined but this excuse is not really required as most of these avoided tournaments and tanked match were in 90's itself.

Till here Lendl was at the top. But sadly the slide started in 1988. There was a resurgence in 1989-1990 but the domination in grand slams was over post 1987.

@@mddistribution30 .. yes agree and hence have mentioned about the resurgence in 89-90. However in 3 years he won only 2 slams post 1987. While from Sept 85 to 87 he won 5 out of the 8 GS played. Also post 1987 no further Masters wins as well. The younger opponents like Becker, Cash and Edberg caught up with him. Same thing happened to Becker and Edberg as well. After winning 6 GS each, they could go no further due to Sampras, Courier and Agassi!

Agree. I remember 1988 was disappointing for Lendl. In 87 he won both the French and US Open. At the time Lendl would have still considered 88 a great year if he had won the U.S. Open. He almost won the U.S. Open in 88 but Wilander was having the best year of his career with 3 slams that year.

@paulc7804 think Lendl was bothered by injuries at crucial points that year. His thigh was badly torn during his semi with Becker at Wimbledon and I think he had shoulder trouble at the Open, which ended up requiring surgery later that year.

Let’s just appreciate the serve motion of Edberg that so many use today, the back foot position, allowing body to turn during the beginning, the drifting of the ball toss, the pronation after contact, the inability to read if he was hitting flat or spin, amazing
