Hardware cuz it looks fun, also i don't want to sit around writing code all day

Hey abishek, I would love to have a 1-1 discussion with you as I’m really interested in working in computer architecture. Have a great day!

I’m curious about the demand for international students in job positions like TPU and SoC design, especially in U.S. semiconductor companies that use Verilog. Are there visa sponsorship opportunities in this field? I'm particularly interested in AI chips and considering pursuing a master’s degree in the U.S. in this area. Initially, I was going to focus on the CS branch (software engineering, ML, data engineering) for broader opportunities, but I’ve heard that it's becoming difficult to find jobs in the software field due to market saturation. My undergraduate major is electrical engineering, and I’d like to pursue a career in hardware in the U.S., but I don't have much information. Is it still more advantageous for foreigners without U.S. citizenship to focus on software rather than hardware?

Is age discrimination an issue with landing a Hardware engineering job? I am currently 28 and looking to switch careers and it would suck if I put in hard work just to be turned down from internships because I'm a nontraditional student.

It may not take your job, but it certainly must have written the script for this video. I guess it was about as informative as any 5min video could be, but it lacks any amount of personality or flavor. Down to the music, and the editing, you’re just soullessly following a template. Edit: I do really like the generative art at 2:02 though. Very pleasing to look at and on-theme.

I am an incoming first year, taking a computer engineering course. I decided to take computer engineering because I believe that 4 years from now(by the time I graduate) software roles would not be as dominant in the industry as it is today. There would be more hardware/both hw and sw roles than today and the pay would also be better or even at the same level as the software roles of today. Do you also think that this will be the case? or do you think software will still be dominant in 4 years from now?

Interesting to see this video + the comments. After 32 years in the hardware field, I am studying CS/programming full-time, in order to attempt to switch to SW (or slide over to embedded--which is essentially what Abishek does in general). Honestly, at age 52, I'd much rather just go to work and earn a paycheck, rather than study. But I put off the desire to switch, ignoring my instincts for nearly 15 years. I can't imagine where I'd be if I had switched back then. Most of my career was 30 years as an Electronics Technician, and then promoted to HW Engineer for the last 2 years (actually 3 more years, totaling 5, as I was unofficially moonlighting 1000 hrs/yr, on top of my 40 hr/week Tech job). Talk about hard work. As someone who skipped getting a 4-year degree, I can attest to how difficult it is to qualify for nearly ALL hardware engineering positions without a minimum BS degree. My promotion officially to "HW Eng" was only because the company I worked paid poorly and with the Great Resignation, they knew my qualification wasn't something to dismiss (Oh, and I threatened to quit). While SW and HW are two very different jobs, I appreciate the point Abishek makes about how complex HW engineering is (like SW). The total number of jobs in HW are in fact much fewer. "Cushy" is relative. The fact: most HW jobs whether start-up, manufacturing new prod dev, or sustaining (support manuf. dev, lifecycle mgmt, etc.) are very time consuming, with a lot of problems to solve, things that go wrong, impossible schedules to meet, etc. Also, development cycles are much longer due to physical production of "widgets" rather than code. The stress can be quite high at times. Again, as SW and HW are quite different, the pay for HW can be much less to start, have much smaller jumps in pay (per rung), and cap out much lower than SW. I don't know that it is true that HW is "catching up". Perhaps it is finally happening. Either way, I still intend on switching to SW, despite my age, the layoffs, and the industry changes occurring. My burnout in the HW industry, coming from doing the work of 2-3 people during much of the pandemic, getting 2-3% raises on average, despite high merit, company-wide praise / appreciation, unprecedented local COL increase, on top of national inflation, has caused me to become completely unmotivated to continue in HW.

I have a feeling that hardware is going to be in more demand than software soon. AI is ripping knowledge work to shreds, especially software. AI will definitely be a major tool in hardware, however AI can't "create" hardware yet, it can however "create" software. Plus with all of the new capabilities AI will bring, there are gonna be a whole lot of new robots and hardware systems to design and create in order to take full advantage of AI.
@adaxer785sk23 ай бұрын
I agree. We will need more electrical engineers that can grasph complex systems and integrate them with electronic circuits and communication systems. I think that electrical engineer with AI/ML knowledge will be powerfull

@hashirasad25994 күн бұрын
AI is not peak of computer development. There are complex systems like Linux kernel and low level stuff that cant be just built by mere prompting. And AI cant create unique new software like UNIX or something which needs idea from scratch

Do you think a Computer Engineering degree is inferior to just CS or EE? A lot of people say that because you don't go deep into either field, you really don't become a master of anything. is this true?
@anipacify11633 ай бұрын
U don't become a master of something bc of your course . U become good at something based on the efforts you put in to it. CE is a future proof course if you think CS jobs are on the verge your VLSI / embedded skills can save you . Flexibility to land up in any field.

@Naomi-xu4hq4 ай бұрын
Just so everyone’s aware also. Doing a major in hardware vs software does not determine your entire life and leave off any other aspects. Many hardware engineers know elementary code and go onto do coding projects and work in software. Posts of software engineers can go into product and project management of hardware or the logistical side of it. And getting a second degree is much easier later in life once you have enough income to splurge a lot of us honestly just want our first paycheck in a relatively interesting field

I'm currently finishing my bachelors in Computer Science, but I'm thinking I want to work closer to the hardware side. Do you think I can transition to Hardware Engineer if I say get a masters in Electrical Engineering or would I need a bachelors instead since a masters is only a smaller time frame & might not cover what a bachelors would?
@adaxer785sk23 ай бұрын
I would highly suggest to take computer engineering route. If you wouldnt gradute from CS, I would say Electrical engineering 100%. But from what I know about CS. You should graduate from ECE to easily start masters in EE. It is doable with CS background but you will have to understand physics and circuit theory. My advice is to go with computer engineering and try to specialize close to electronics. But you can definetly do it, It will be just little bit harder to grasph bachelors EE. Good luck!
