If I’m interesting in the RTL and digital design hardware engineering roles, what would be a good start? I’m currently learning PCB design and I plan to start learning VHDL or Verilog (and figure out the difference between the two) but I am not sure what I can do to stand out. I know projects help, but what projects in particular help?

You build a game or service that runs on an fpga. While it may not be the most efficient, you can build parts of the project in SystemVerilog and interface this hardware with software. You can do this with fpga learning kit, or just test it using simulation, lots of options!

You'll want Electrical Engineering or Electrical & Computer Engineering courses under your belt. You don't actually need to be a CS major to have a professional coding background. In fact, folks I know in industry recommend that young people pursue EE or ECE over CS. So many CS students graduate with nothing to show for it, whereas EE and ECE students have most everything the CS students do plus all the big scary logic and circuit courses that CS students get filtered out of.

I'm from ECE background and currently in software role with 1.5 YoE, I have lost touch with lot of my ECE knowledge but still want to get back to doing Computer Engineering. Basically, I'm doing web dev stuff in my job and want to go to lower abstraction levels if possible. Doesnt have to be HW, but I do want to pursue MS from a good uni. My undergrad was a disaster, no interns, no research etc. What steps I can take to catch up and build a good profile?

Maybe do some cool projects, write compelling essays, contact admissions and maybe talk to some professors directly. Emphasize your passion for ece.

Was looking for this on my research on hardware engineering roles. I don’t know if my reasoning is flawed but I am getting scared of learning software due to flooded competition and potential replacement/ low demand because ofAI automation . My assumption is that it’s difficult to automate hardware engineering with AI. Please let me know what you think.

I think highly specialized roles (in sw or hw) are harder to replace with AI. I wouldn’t worry so much about getting replaced, instead learn how to improve efficiency using AI and understand which skills/tasks AI simply can’t do (be good at these tasks)

Explore tech in any way u can, join robotics, enter hackathons, stuff like that. You have plenty of time, don’t worry about doing the exact right things to get a job you might not even want :)

4 year degree, can cost a lot depending on the school but scholarships are definitely available. Would suggest doing research on different programs, specifically public state-schools, which may be more likely to give scholarships and are generally cheaper.
