Thank you for this wonderful starting point - I’ve been sitting on my lovely new box of pastels for ages (because the approach is so different to my limited watercolour palette), but this was the trigger that got me started. I love them!

Do you recommend a fixative. I’m a little cautious of using them as it darkens the final color application. I generally just framed the last layer of color with glare-free glass.
@monetcafe3 күн бұрын
I never use fixative on my final painting because of what you just mentioned… Darkening the colors. For temporary storage, I keep my paintings in clear bags with a piece of foam core cut to fit for Support. I also sometimes keep them in between the pages of large tracing paper pads. The best way to protect a pastel painting permanently is under glass and framed.

I have Sennelier soft pastels. Can I use these pastels? I have a very large selection in colors.

Yes… I love Sennelier pastels. They would work great.

Sorry, I jumped ahead a bit... Question: I know you've worked in gouache before, but have you ever tried doing the underpainting in the blue side, the in gouache as a glaze to the other side..? 🤠
@monetcafe4 күн бұрын
I’ve never tried that, but it sounds interesting. Is that something you’ve done?
@JLPrice-kc2uy4 күн бұрын
@monetcafe As you know I started in oils. I switch to watercolors later on, because of not having the proper place to paint. I absolutely resist using masking... This led me to using watercolors. Painting on the dark side; watercolor can lighten up enough to keep the highlights below the darkest lights on the other side. Gouache, as you already know will reactivate enough for blending and highlights. Plus, the white paint is just a tube of acrylic paints. Finally... This let me block in with a chord of 5 different blue tones. It dries up nicely, and when glazing, it only reactivate in order to let me blend. 👍

Thank you ..... Much needed info. I just finished my first pastel painting and I love it. But the dust from the pastel lingers on the surface I tap it off and it's still there. I thought about using a vacuum cleaner. Any suggestions?

@JLPrice-kc2uy9 күн бұрын
@monetcafe I love them... In case you have forgotten, I was making a joke from the comment from the person who told you to stick to pastels lol. I have for almost 9 years, not only adored your artwork but you as a person, a mother, and a woman who insisted on having things her way and not giving up. It is my opinion that you can do anything, that you put your mind to do, and back it up. ♥️

I love your choice of colours in your painting. The loose style of watercolour painting is so freeing to experiment with colour and techniques. I appreciate your comment that God is the creator of the nature we see around us. He is a God of beauty and splendour.
