I have this deck and love it. I did have to round the corners though, shuffling the deck was painful with those pointed corners so I wasn't using it until I fixed the problem.

There is actually a book out now in English about this deck. Its called the Esoteric Etteilla. I found it on Amazon.

I see steam rather than smoke, Marilyn. I have been literally tempering my cider with water 50/50 for the last 4 months. Temperance has helped me to cut my drinking down. 07:42 I love the water pouring to tone down the fiery passions.

Before I ever saw images of that Cafe in Paris, I used to have recurring dreams about visiting it and going downstairs into the mouth. In my dream there was a clockwork mechanical "greeter" just inside resembling the devil, and inside was an entire balcony of clockwork mechanical devils playing instruments like a jazz band. It was basically a 19th century demonic Chuckee Cheese in my dreams. 😅 The first time I saw images of it in an Art History class I about fell out of my chair. It's so cool to see it remembered in a tarot card!

For anyone who's interested, Yves Renaud released a new, more thoroughly restored, edition of the Chosson in 2022. The lines and colors are more clean and distinct, but it's still very close to the original. The new edition is dated 1672.

I'm not sure about the origin of the Temperance image itself, but I do know that the Greeks and Romans mixed water with wine and the mixing process itself was important to especially the Dionysian cults. Apparently the person in charge of mixing the wine was supposed to make sure the crowd didn't get too drunk. This does feel similar to me to the idea of Temperance. For the Tarot of Paris image, my guess is that they are taking after the Bolognese tradition of equating Temperance not to control of alcohol, but to the act of Tempering... the cooling down of metal during the forging process. For certain uses you would let the metal slowly cool in the air, and for other purposes you would quench it quickly in a bath or water or even a bath of oil. This can impact the strength of the metal. So in some ways they are similar, but Tempering is more about preparing for something later rather than an end to itself. This is likely why you find Tempra before Forza in the Bolognese order! Really cool, love the conjoined twins!

I'm not entirely shocked about the negative comments that you received, but that is also exactly why I hate to read for tarot readers. In a very polite way, my spiel goes something like this: MY cards don't speak YOUR language, so let me do what I do, and we will discuss YOUR interpretations of MY cards at an appropriate time in the conversation. With long-term tarot study, each person develops a particular language with the cards, each person notices trends that become clues for that reader and possibly no one else. Also, as I have come to learn--both from other readers and some three decades of experience--read the deck in front of you. Yes, learn whatever "system" you like, but when the cards hit the table, read the deck you have. The Lovers of the RWS are not the Lovers of the Thoth are not the Lovers of the Marseille. No matter what your "system" denotes the meaning of The Lovers, each of the aforementioned cards has a different connotation in imagery. Keep doing what you do, Marilyn! Reading the cards in a context--whether the cards beside one or a series of cards in a row--is something that actually drew me to your channel in the first place. I think it’s good not just for cartomancy but in general, to always be mindful of the greater context or relationships of things. It seemed very intuitively valid to me, and i think it’s a great way to read. I agree with the other commenter who said that your critics are just ignorant. To view the world in such an individuated and disconnected way just leads to misunderstandings and harm.

Dear Marilyn, this situation gets worse and worse. Now I understand why you were so eager to leave the hospital. That was horribly unkind, and unacceptable treatment by the nursing staff. I'm really struggling to understand why people would pile in on you for suggesting that cards in combinations can influence each other (if I'm understanding correctly). Sorry, but that actually shows their ignorance or rather that their reading ability is not fully developed. As you may recall we have been studying tarot for about the same time and starting with pips cards and then to RWS and back to pips and it's taken me decades to really understand how this works. It's rather like the difference between a person learning to speak English from another language and the person who thinks and expresses themselves in idiomatic English.

I hate that they were so cruel to you. I've been there. It is painful trying to get a vein in the hand and it doesn't work. You end up with black and blue hands. And the bend in your arm as if it was your fault. No compassion. I now know my right arm is the only place to draw blood or to put an IV. Some nurses are better at it. After 5 tries one asked for another nurse. And she gets it first try. There is no excuse for the lack of compassion.

Oh Marilyn !!! I'm in shock ! and so ,so sorry to learn of your dreadful and totally inexcusable treatment whilst enduring a hospital stay. Certainly cause for complaint to the relevant medical board. You and your husband too must have been very distressed at the time. Thank you for yet another fascinating read 😄 I too recommend highly Gergely's creation of the Tarot de Paris . I love his artistic interpretations , colours chosen and card stock. Honestly as his other decks ....excellent !!! I hope your infection clears up fast and you will be fighting fit in no time!

oh by the way, Gergely at Midnight tarot decks has a very cleared up reproduction of the Tarot of Paris, but it’s not very faithful to the original and has some choppy line work. Also hoping Artisan publishes theirs but it’s been delayed over and over. Hopefully someone makes one! ☺️

I'm so sorry you haven't felt well. Hope things work out well. When my mom was in the hospital for surgery and she came out for recovery, the nurse was very cruel to her. We had to file official complaints. You didn't deserve any of this happening to you. I'm in NY state and I do know what hospital your talking about and you aren't the only person making complaints of them. God Bless You 🙏

I always thought this was the cup cover, as decks like the Vieville (at least facsimiles like Artisan) show it quite clearly as such - and then the cup is covered in the Queen and King. How can I buy Marco Benedetti decks?

Hello Marilyn! Another great video!!! 😀 Have you ever seen the second edition of the Il Meneghello deck. Your video is of the first edition...2003...which i just now LOST OUT on an ebay purchase. 😭 I found a second edition (printed in 2022) online....and was curious if you've ever come across one...and if so, how it compared to the first 2003 edition. Keep up the good work with the videos! Ed

I just got my Al Soldato and am loving it.. I didn't realize you also had a video on this gorgeous (and available, and affordable!) reproduction. Just something I found in my studies that I thought was fun... while the Italian cards generally call the Fool some variation of Matto (drunkedness or madness) there was of course some overlap with French names, so some regions started using some variation of Folle. Where this gets interesting is that the words related to "Fool" all come from the Latin Follis, which refers to inflated bellows, or puffed cheeks. In English we might say that someone is an "air head" a "wind bag" or "full of hot air". But the connotation of blowing air also applies to playing pipes and especially to bagpipes! For identifying the Moors, here are some shortcuts: The religious figures wear cloaks clasped in an X shape... X for X'ian, Christian or Church. The secular leaders hold the Orbis Mundi, the globe of dominion, and scepters of power. The male cards are all holding their hands down at their laps, while the female cards hold their hands up. The keys of the Popess have been replaced by multiple arrows. It is a little harder to see this with the Al Mondo, but IMO the Moors with the arrows are the Pope and Papess, the ones with the scepters are the Emperor and Empress. Again we can identify the Papess as having multiple arrows representing her keys, and her right hand is up on her bow. The Al Mondo Pope has one arrow, like the spear of the Al Soldato. For the secular rulers, I suppose you could equate the sun scepter with the Emperor and the moon scepter with the Empress. Or you could say that the figure with their hand higher up is the female card and thus the sun scepter is the Empress. Note that the Moor with the bow and the Moor with the sun scepter both have jewels on their turbans while the other two do not, another indication to me that these are meant to be the ladies. The Hermit was called Vecchio (the old man) and he has wings because he represents the passage of Time... as in Tempus Fugit, time flies! His hourglass has morphed into a column in the same way it morphed into the lantern in Marseilles decks. An "error" I see in many of these reproduction decks is that the Hanged man was in some cases in Bologna represented right-side-up. I don't know enough to know exactly which decks this happened in, but I wish these reproduction decks offered a duplicate card in this orientation!

One of my students time ago used this deck for the exercises. I remember feeling weird with those colors 😂. Sorry it was not what you needed. If I'm not mistaken there's a plastic edition of the Scapini tarot, but I don't remember who did it, and maybe it's not what you are looking for. Anyway, I'm glad to see you back again here. I just got an Al Soldato deck! It is interesting that your deck has the lower pips, I was under the impression that the Bolongese decks were 62 card tarocchino. Have you ever tried doing readings uing the Bolognese cartomancy meanings? In this spread it would be something like.... Fool: Madness or Driving Crazy, (2 of swords doesnt exist, but the next card would be) 6 of Swords: Passion, Angel: Marriage & Accomodation, 10 of Cups: Roof of the House or Joy, and for the Devil: Anger or Devilry. So overall a similar reading but slightly different particulars! The Devil would be 14 in the Bologna order, so slightly different on the numbering. It's really cool to see these being read though!
