Just started learning the Banjo and learned this song recently. This is totally badass. It reminds me of my roots in appalacia, Wild and Wonderful West Virginia. Im on the west coast now but Appalacia will never leave me.

Hi Levi, thanks for your comment. Although I am Dutch I can imagine that it is impossible to erase the appalachians from your mind and memory. I have been there once and I must say that I also have unforgettable memories of it. I wish you a lot of success learning to play "the most beautiful instrument in the world". Cheers, Marcel

Best version out there Marcel..!! Dr Google reveals that the original version was the first record ever to sell 1 million copies. How about that..?? Can I ask, what do you use to create your bass backup Marcel..?

Hi Michael, thanks for your comment and the info about the song. I use strummachine to create my backing tracks. Cheers, Marcel

I notice you don't use the "X" and "y" positions in your right hand placement as earl oftern moves his right hand very close to the frets when he venture up the neck. Sweet sounding banjo, though.
@Marcel-Arendsen25 күн бұрын
Jim, your observation is correct. I keep playing in the X position because I play solo all the time in my videos. If I play in a band I use the X and Y positions where it supports the band the best.
@jimsatterfield8748Ай бұрын
You should put a book of tabs together. Love your playing. Everybody is saying how good your banjo sounds (& it does), but you would sound terrific on any reasonable banjo.
@Marcel-ArendsenАй бұрын
If i ever get the time I will definitely consider writing out tabs.

Thank you Jim, I used to play in bands but that took up too much time besides my full time job. After covid I decided to take it easy at my own pace and opened this youtube channel. At the moment I am very busy but in a while I will definitely post videos again. Cheers, Marcel

Hello Chantal, I would like to explain it to you, but that is a lot of work. Am sorry. I don't have a tab for it either. You will see the fingering for the second banjo in the right part of the screen. If it goes too fast you can also slow down the video. I hope you figure it out this way. Cheers, Marcel

Marcel, my friend, I enjoy tabbing out your arrangements because they sound great and are fun to play, and, that OME has a "crack" similar to old 40 hole archtop Gibsons, which is great, but lacks the "decay " of the notes, but, of course so do all banjos that aren't prewar Gibsons..IMHO.
@Marcel-Arendsen3 ай бұрын
Hello Claude, thank you for your comment my friend. If I ever get time for it, I will also tab my arrangements. And yes, you're probably right; nothing can beat a prewar Gibson.... except an even better prewar Gibson... 😉, Marcel

I learned that tune 60 years ago when I was a kid in Los Angeles, after being inspired by seeing Scruggs play it live at a small folk music club called the Ash Grove. You show the world what pure bluegrass banjo is all about Marcel. You’re the greatest!

SO insanely good! All of your videos underline for me where my own banjo picking went wrong..... I spent too many years trying to learn fancy Bela-Noam-Trischka type flashy licks, and not nearly enough time working with a metronome and getting a really solid right hand. You've done it the right way - your picking is super-clean, you have an exquisite touch and perfect timing. Exceptionally fine picking!
@Marcel-Arendsen4 ай бұрын
Hi Bernie, thank you for your nice compliments. You are absolutely right. I often see that students want to learn the difficult things too early. In the long run it is at the expense of timing and solid playing. I've learned that melody, simple playing, forward rolls and timing do the magic. Try it, you will be surprised. I only use the fancy licks sparingly. Cheers, Marcel
