I use a pipe cap and hydraulic press. I press buckle into a block of urethane with the pipe cap and press. I show this in one of my buckle videos on here.

Please forgive my ignorance but when you say you "tinned the bars " what does this mean I also see using a soldering iron I am a wee bit confused I do apologize but I stepped away for a few years of working on inlay and have just started up again and love this ring and would love to learn how to create it. I have never seen anyone solder in the silver the ones I see usually just make super thin strips and glue them in. Love your style of doing this
@JohnNordDesigns26 күн бұрын
Yes, lots of people glue in the bars…i chose to solder in the bars so they were stable while i was fitting stones. I like this because bars are in place and i know exactly the space i need to fit stones in. “Tinning “ in this case refers to putting solder on bars before inserting them, then adding heat for it to melt them in place… thats about the best i can explain it.

This is the perfect video for the idea I had which was to inlay stones like you did instead of crushing like most videos I seen. Looked great 😊

Painting the ends of each of the triangle shank wire with yellow ocher will prevent the solder from flowing there and thus avoiding having to saw them apart. Also, why are you using easy solder from the beginning? I would start with hard and then use medium to attach the shank to the bezel.

Thank you. I have used whiteout for the same purpose… just didnt do it here. Thank you for the comment and tip!

I used 65% on ring shank. I try to go from hard to easy on the various steps including bezel pieces. But we all have our preferences. I am a handmade western artisan, not a trained jeweler….simply trying to show people for free how they can make something. My methods have always worked well for me. Im sure there are other ways.

Thanks John! I'm also interested in your grinder you used making your Conch shell ring Thanks Tom looking into the Acetylene air torch! Thanks a bunch!
@JohnNordDesigns4 ай бұрын
My orbital is from a wood carving supply. I have had it for 7-8 years. Never no problems. Much cheaper than engraver’s supply toys! Its reversible and speed controlled. Fits all the engraver bits.

Hi John--I'm interested in your larger torch because I make musical instruments and I need a hotter torch than my Map gas torch. I need to silver solder 3/16 to 1/4" thick brass together on an approximately 15 degree angle joints. What and where to buy? Thank you for your advice! Tom
@JohnNordDesigns4 ай бұрын
It is called a Acetylene air torch. It runs off of a bottle of Acetylene and the torch mixes air with it. You can find kits on ebay and amazon with different size tips, a hose, regulator and torch for about $150. I run mine off of a B tank. Hope that helps.

@tahomyjo4 ай бұрын
Oh I get it now because there is no backplate ! The bezel gets soldered straight to the ring shank :)

Really trying to learn, what kind of pin do you use to connect to shank
@JohnNordDesigns10 ай бұрын
To attach rowel to shank you use 3/16” dia headed solid rivets….or if you welding then in, just use 3/16” rod (steel)
