My Grandpa (Opa) was shot down in a helicopter while serving in Vietnam. He had been shot through the leg, so he used some of the blood and smeared it on himself and pretended to be dead. And it worked! He was awarded the most beautiful purple heart medal you have ever seen. Went on to a career as a police officer. Sure made Grandma (Oma) feel protected and safe at home.

To Mr. Bonnie Grady Kinard, my friend Darrel's father. He was a UH-1 pilot in Nam. He had been shot thru the bottom of the copter. He had a wound in his neck that healed on the outside but not on the inside. I think he went to Morehouse College. We were neighbors, the whole neighborhood was veterans. Mr. Kinard like my own father and Mr. Edwards next door on the other side lived their lives not asking anyone for anything and no sympathies. Just giving their kids ideal lives. Never a mention to anyone of the lives they had come thru in Black america. No bone spurs and no excuses.

Just curious, why not just roll the throttle into the overtravel spring? This way you won't get that right yaw when raising collective to cushion the set down.

First of all, great job! The first solo is always a memorable one. Secondly, to your instructor, (at the risk of sounding like a negative Nancy), I would advise against filming your students’ first solos. 100% of their focus needs to be on flying the helicopter, and there needs to be zero chance that they could be thinking about the video. Their mind could easily drift to the filming, how they’re going to post it to their social medias later, “wouldn’t it look cool on film if I did this”…, etc. Not every student would be guilty of these pitfalls, but if something bad were to happen on this flight, it would be very easy to put the blame on filming himself flying. Safety first, always, and I just see a potential problem here. Seeing how this was 5 years ago and he’s probably not instructing anymore, any instructor or student that watches this video needs to contemplate this thought.

Pulled mine apart today after a long range session. The bolt had not been cleaned by the previous 10 owners. It is the first serie with the steel magazine. Quite different and much easier, see YT clip by Brandon. Push out the small pin at the back. That releases the back toggle. Pop out spring, side cam part and firing pin bar. Honestly speaking: the old version seems to be sturdier and easier than the new one. Cleaned a lot of gunk at the inside, than break cleaner. Ear buts at inside, tooth brush outside cleaning. Lubed it with Rem oil! I can toggle it now with 1 finger push
