5:30 I've lived in Cincinnati my for my entire 37 years and don't have a single photo of myself holding a fish. One was taken once when I caught my first fish as a kid but that's been long lost.

What's definitely a big difference is that an American can get culture shock simply visiting another state. Living in a liberal part of the Pacific Northwest, going to a starkly conservative part of the South was absolutely shocking, if not more than a little disturbing. I feel like you just don't get that in the UK. You'd have to go to, let's say, Poland to get a similar shock at what the locals see as cultural norms.

Lawrence, you look quite the midwesterner. When you have a guest it is nice to give them a gift (something local) or Bag of Swag. lol

Akron, Ohio... I'm originally from Cleveland and a long time ago I use to go to a bar in Akron that was owned by the Mafia. Bit upscale, not a T-shirt place and there were always limo's parked behind the building. It was eventually forced to close down for good... wonder why? I lived in Germany for years and I loved it. My wife was German, born and raised. But as Evan seems to consider himself a Brit now. I am American and came back to the states. LOL

Many maple and aspen trees are native to North America and so much more common there. They are well known for their vibrant autumn colours. Common English trees like oak, alder, Haworth, beech etc are not so intensely colourful in autumn. So it’s a real thing but to be honest maple and aspen are the exception not the rule. Most deciduous trees globally tend towards a bit less intense colours.

In 6 months, I haven't driven in Britain beyond a parking lot. Coming back to the USA, I had to consciously remember where to stand on the road for a bus and had to talk myself through the first 5 minutes of driving so as not to turn into the left lane. Additionally, I am entirely confused about all memories in a car. Crystal clear memories of my British friends driving me around the UK and sitting to my left while core memories of being a USAian, the driver is to my right. My brain is utterly confused.

If a random employee at a check out asks me for a donation I just tell them that I don't donate to charities through corporations, been saying it for years and I have no shame. It baffles me that I go to McDonald's and they ask me if I want to give them extra money and I'm just going to take this terrible evil company's word that they're going to give it to charity? Hell no!

But Laurence, you now have a Chicago accent with more than subtle British overtones. Why does Evan not speak with a British accent with New Jersey accent overtones ?

I only spent a year in Korea 🇰🇷, and I experienced more culture shock when I returned to the States than I did when I landed in the ROK. 6:00 If you think the midwest is friendly you ought to visit the South. Southern hospitality is a cliche for a reason. 🙂

The waiter thing is so stupid. With tips they make WAY more than any other waiter anywhere else in the world. And on top of that, IF they don't make enough tips to make the minimum wage of whatever, the restaurant HAS to make up the difference up to minimum wage.

Not sure about the UK, but at least here in America, those donations that you give through a retail business’s checkout system is not a donation from the company using your money. It is 100% YOUR donation that YOU can write off on your taxes using the receipt you get from said retail store. That donation can not legally be written off by the retail store and in fact, doesn’t even touch the company’s books to even have the opportunity to be written off. I assume it’s the same in the UK. Also sorry for sounding rant-y, but so many nonprofits rely a lot on retail store checkout donations and I can’t stand to let misinformation like what Evan said go unchecked when it has the potential to hurt the people in need who rely on nonprofit services to subsist in some way.

It took my American friend who moved to England about 15 years to start really losing her original accent. She's now been there almost 25 years and I imagine sounds even more British now. It's interesting how some immigrants never lose their accents though. My coworker is from Manchester and has lived here in the US almost 40 years and still has a very English accent.

There are foods that are not available everywhere. For example, I grew up a couple of hours from Chicago. We used Brooks Hot Chili Bean in our chili. Now I live in Florida and can't find that brand anywhere.

As someone who has lived all over the Country. From home in Massachusetts (New England) to Texas, Michigan, Iowa, Oklahoma, Northern California, New York, among many other states. I can say that people are the same everywhere. You will find the same types of people no matter where you go. I can also say that things are the same no matter where you go. Like infrastructure and entertainment. The only difference between states is how far you need to travel to access the same things.

Indeed, America really could do better when it comes to tipping culture. Like eliminate it, you know? (Just figure out how Europe [and elsewhere] manage to pay service workers a decent wage.)

Let Evan know what happened to California when the Legislature and Governor passed a bill that increased service wages to $25/hr. Franchises closed down, shops went out of business, employees had their hours cut, and were laid off or terminated. People had to scramble to find a solution how to live.
