I like the conclusion. I really like the conclusion of this lecture; rasonable and practical.

Fascinating. I worked on the Oberon class refits as an apprentice ( Rosyth) in the early/ mid 80’s and then on to SSN’s ( Warspite/ Churchill etc) and SSBN’s ( Resolution class) refits onward to the 90’s. Good memories albeit back breaking work. Thanks for the interesting upload.

By the time this crew was operating the Kamhuber Line was obsolete and the Germans were using Zame Sau tactics which sought to inject nightfighters into the bomber stream as opposed to the 'static' combat boxes of the Kamhuber Line. Timing was still important as it kept the bomber stream intact and maximised window (chaff) coverage and allowed an attack to have the best chance to overwhelm the target flak and air raid defenses. Re: Tinsel by this stage had its microphone mounted on the fuselage as opposed to in the engine mount.

What an excellent presentation. It brought back many very happy memories of my time in RORQUAL ( CO Peter Christmas) and OTUS (CO Neil Robertson). As MEO of OTUS the navigational aspects of being Officer of the Watch dived and surfaced was a very interesting and at times challenging for an Engineer Officer not specifically trained in seamanship matters. You learned very quickly indeed. I remember you well from the many times our paths have crossed in the past.

Hello, I did Part 3 on Rorqual. Great boat and crew. Ziggy Belton, Tim Holt, Jerry O,Sullivan, Jan Guard to name a few in 73-74

There's langauge similarities between Marshallese language and Pohnpeian and Chuukese, how does that explain the migration pater eastward then northwards through Tuvalu and Kiribati

Many thanks James. Brought back memories of a Part III on the plot table of an A boat, then on P' & O Boats (and SINS on an 'R' class patrols). And of course, those pleasure trips (sic) we undertook in the Med on DR and EP. 🙂 I was on Resolution Stbd crew (Cmdr Ken Fewer as C.O.) and well remember Cmdr Colin Grant.

Fascinating documentary. Thank you. Did 6 days at sea on Otus during sea trials (ex Devonport fitter). Got the upmost respect for all submariners special breed & all smashing lads, on what were smashing boats. From memory we managed 14 knots on the surface (measured mile). They certainly did corkscrew around on the surface in foul weather!! Great memories.

Had Satnav (US kit) in 79-80 only 6-7 satellites, had to tune the set in manually. Could only get 3-4 fixes a day as 3 satellites had to pass overhead within 20 mins for a valid fix. Great vid.👍

That was great thanks. I used to watch Dominies flying out of Finningley when navigation moved up there in the late 70s. Today i have my own cockpit simulator and tried replicating Dominic navigation flights, but wasn’t sure of the details. This has helped a lot!

The idea of downloading and printing a symbol guide highlights a need for people familiar with technology in this panel, not just with navigation. All modern plotters I am aware of allow selecting a symbol and getting an explanation on the plotter immediately of what that symbol is. A simple and integrated technology solution to a technology problem. A print out is more likely to block my bilge pump than be a useful resource! Similarly, in 2023 we should not be striving to publish booklets. This information should be kept up to date and freely accessible on the Internet. Not behind a paywall, and not behind a pointless survey. Nobody I know has read this booklet and most are unaware it even exists. As a web resource I'm sure people would link to sections relevant to conversation, but as it stands they cannot and so few even know it exists. This stuff is constantly changing and evolving so should not be considered a final published item.

Interesting stuff. As an enlisted sailor in the US Submarine service, I can vouch that sometimes when in 'transit' from point A to B, we would sometimes have to rig for deep and spend a few hours near our maximum depth. I learned quickly that we were one of our Navy's deeper diving boats and we were probably doing deep to avoid a 'friendly' that was transiting in some other direction. Don't ask too many questions and sonar wouldn't talk, nor the OOD. Just mind your own business and keep an eye on your panel! lol

In terms of actually navigating - ‘finding our way’ - isn’t nature simply telling us a story about what’s going on in terms of what’s growing, what species live in this environment and perhaps leaving clues as to what’s in the area…water etc.? Out on the bleaker, more remote upland hills & mountains, weather and observation of the few smaller plant organisms & Lichens won’t really help me find my way; whereas, learning the visible planetary clues (if they are visible) and the shape/feel of the landscape over time may help me orientate myself with fewer aids than when I first travel across the ground using some sort of map / compass combination, even if the map is a simple hand-drawn sketch of the principle features from which I can orientate myself?

Excellent informative video. As a "lay person" who uses the ferries in and out of Portsmouth frequently I had been looking for an explanation of all this . Very informative thank you.

I think an app, scanning a sign on an app map would help me. I wouldn't ask anyone. So it would work for me. I have been getting lost in buildings and places for along time. Thank you for talking about this it's very interesting and I'm hoping I can find some solution eventually 😊

Tip top video and my Granddad was also serving on HMS Comus on that day the ship was attacked, his name was Able Seaman Sydney Rickwood. Also I found in Portsmouth an original ships badge from HMS Comus.

As a private pilot, I found your presentation interesting that submarines used Loran-A - C, the same as we used in the 80's and 90's until GPS. I wish you had provided more charts on the "Box" submarines patrolled. Does country (UK) announce it will transit another country's (Spain) "Box"?

Disappointing the Q&A was omitted from this. Some serious concerns were raised about the suitably of what3words in emergency situations - mainly because very similar sounding words can result in places only a few miles apart and the nature of the wordlist.

As previously stated on other social media channels, We have not selectively removed the Q&A from only this webinar - this is our standard practice. We never include the Q&A sections of our webinars when we upload the recordings to KZbin.
