This may sound weird, but imo an Orcish Incursion should come back. I recently introduced my couple and a few friends to wesnoth, and Orcish Incursion, precisely because how simple it is, served as a fine learning curve (except rhe swamp level). I know It's simple and redundant to a veteran player, but I think It does a good job serving as a continuation for the tutorial

Something I'd find funny with the undeads would be a subclass which focuses on the zombie invasion aspect of undeads (a bit like in the add on campaign "danse macabre"), like by making skeletton worse, gouls can stay the same since they're pretty weak already, adepts get a slight damage nerf and maybe cost more but now have plague on all their attacks, and most importantly zombies can evolve into skeletton or gouls. With that you make them have to rely on their adepts to keep zombifying since they're way weaker than other factions without it, and they've got to turn zombies into soulless sometimes to keep having units with plague once they start loosing too much adepts (to push towards that soulless could be buffed a little).

In Wesnoth that is somewhat hard to do since there arent any aoe attack that could keep it in check. Walking corpse would probably need to be level 1 or at least upkeep 1 to limit the possible snowball that could happen with it. Not impossible but hard to get right just because of that snowball. Nontheless maybe in the future for the round two or something if it happens/

@@hejnewar9044 Yeah I can see why snowball would cause balancing problems, the variety in sizes of maps, match ups and in the amount of players on the field would create big inconsistencies in this kind of strategy. Once i've got more time than I do currently I think I'll put my hands in the dirt and try make this idea into a small campaign if I'm capable of it.

But unfortunatley it is getting smaller and smaller. I played one game ith this era and I have a lot of doubt that I will find another person to play with not to mention a match to observe or stream. There honestly is no way this era will be popular but I expected that already anyway.

I would say that the strongest unit for the orcs is the troll. High def rating, high health and regeneration. For a reasonable price.

Missing all the attacks is the most frustrating thing, and you rarely get the joy of evading all enemy attacks because usually you're forced to play more strategically during campaigns to avoid relying on RNG for your units to survive in the first place.

big mistake by blue, sending three spearmen to try to take out one grunt, should have used them to strengthen his position against enemies in the south, probably would have prevented the comeback by white.

defense is really hard on this map, I think. Best to be attacking whenever possible, otherwise there are too many places to try to defend and keep all of your units protected.

Basically the biggest niche of the undead is skeleton which counters most basic units but they get hard countered by specialized units and the undead have no counter to their counters. Ultimately, once they know you're playing as the undead, you're screwed. The undead only do well against, in fact, steamroll the elves. That's why the elves can recruit mages in multiplayer. The undead is a very fun faction but it sucks against sb who knows about basic concepts of resistance and army composition.

As I'm now playing UtBS again (on 1.18): Is there any use for the archer upgrade of the hunter? I think the bola with slow + impact is so much more useful than piercing bow, against the enemies you face here.

Depends how you play, I saw them being used especially in higher levels in combination with other amlas mainly.

Just as a note for the next time you do a similar video: Instead of just listing the relative changes (like +1 gold), it would be more useful to list old and suggested new value (e.g. 23 gold → 24 gold). This makes it possible to understand also for people who don't know the current values.

Great video! I had a question- why did we introduce Dunefolk in 1.16 Multiplayer instead of focusing on adapting/balancing Quenoth for Multiplayer. Quenoth already had portraits, animations, and even a Mainline Campaign. Both Dunefolk and Quenoth are desert themed, but Dunefolk are completely missing portraits and also some animations even to date in 2024. I feel resources should have been put into Quenoth instead of a brand-new faction.

Yep, because they are initially weaker to balance the fact that they dont pay upkeep and often you are not even using your full support capacity.

If the addons are not in the 1.18 addons list. You can get them from you wesnoth 1.16 folder (documents/mygames). Here you can copy older addons and put it into the 1.18 folder and hope they dont break 😅

I found an easier fix though: For Steam players like me, you can just switch between versions starting from 1.14 by going to your Steam library, right clicking on Battle for Wesnoth, click Betas, then click the dropdown list on Beta Participation which should have all versions from 1.14 onward. You can freely switch back and forth between versions without any issue!

Actually Troll Hero has had a unique sprite for quite a while. It was just the Great Troll that reused a sprite from another unit.

When you talk about arcane mage, is it an elf mage that uses arcane, like a level 1 sorceress. or is it a change to the base mage only for the rebels? or would it change also for the loyalists?

Very informative 👏 The Quenoth abilities are only in the UtbS campaign right? I'm unsure of the AOE ability it breaks the tBfW formula. After that we can also suggest that ranged units can attack, not only neighbours even 2 hexes away.

Horseman and his advancements are my most favorite units in the entire game. I have been playing BFW since 2006, and only since last year, I started to tweak and modify the units to my own liking - obviously I will only play solo, else it’s cheating 😅 I just hate the fact that Horseman is pretty much a wuss with pierced-archers and only have 40% at max and only moves on flat terrains with 1 movement cost, and he doesn’t move on mountains!? Like what the hell? But Elvish Riders do.. so I thought enough is enough. "Ulfserker is my favorite unit in the game, so I made a mod where ulfserkers aren't berserk in defence, and their base damage is 4-6. Also, they now have typical dwarve defence in hills and mountains." My dude, horsemen, don't need buffs. Certainly not that kind of mindless super-buff across the board. Typical lvl1 damage is around 18-21, not 24, especially with charge. Why would they have marksman on their blade attack? That makes no sense. They become a preferable choice to mage with their higher resistance, hp and movement. Just having a blade attack at lvl1 makes the choice between Knight and Lancer less meaningful. Also, you reduced their cost by 20%. Horseman's pierce weakness is meant to give opponents the ability to form battle lines with units like drake clasher and spearman, to prevent horsemen from charging just about anything. It forces the player to use tactics to find favorable engagements. The liminal alignment also makes no sense. It's explicitly the gimmick of the dunefolk, and loyalists are day-oriented by design, they're the only two factions with such a high focus on daytime (even drakes have chaotic saurians). (No lore sense either, since horsemen aren't particularly effective at dawn or dusk.) Basically, your horseman is a preferable alternative to spearman, heavy infantryman and mage. It reduces the tactical complexity of the faction and makes it less interesting. The horseman is a similar unit to the ulfserker: it's meant to pick off weak/ranged units, or break through enemy lines. Their high speed makes them ideal to chase enemy scouts, and their resistance to blade means they can attack even melee fighters sometimes. They are not frontline units. They're so expensive in order to force you to protect them and use them conservatively. It's necessary to balance the fact that charge gives them such a huge advantage on offence.

Maybie undead should have some kind of zombie cavalry that served as a bulky movile unit (dragoon-like?) I don't know, but maybie a reworked skeleton rider could fit well

Remove HI? That's insane. How would you smash skeleton archers? They're cool. Not a general unit but a specialist called in for certain missions.
